For IBM, the future of medicine lies in the creation of a gigantic secure database of medical data. Once this data has been collected, his artificial intelligence, Watson, will analyze it and distribute it to health organizations.

To achieve this goal, a new department has been developed by IBM dedicated to developing Watson for the medical sector. In addition to this, the company has recently made several acquisitions, Explorys which has access to more than 50 million medical records in the USA and Phytel which is a system which gives advice to doctors and patients. It is also no less than 2,000 people who will be working full time on this project.

Apple believes in this project and is collaborating with IBM, in particular by allowing Watson's applications to work with HealthKit and ResearchKit. The latter make it possible to collect the health data of their users.

Other players such as medical device manufacturers aim to be able to use Watson to connect their products to the cloud, such as heart monitors. In some cases, Watson will collect the data only for the patient's personal use, but others would like to use and collect the data to better understand the behaviors of medical device users.
