IFTTT (almost) successfully connects the modern smart health home

IFTTT stands for “If This Then That”

IFTTT were founded in San Francisco in 2010 and have since taken on an increasingly demanding role behind the scenes of modern devices and applications. The way it works is as simple as it is successful: on the IFTTT website there are so-called “recipes”. In practice, these are nothing more than set functional sequences, such as how a device A could communicate with device B or device C with software Y.

The users themselves provide the ideas. Loosely based on the name of the company, which translates as “if that [passiert], then [löse] that means from “, users combine different components with each other. As an example: whenever they enter the apartment and this is determined by a motion sensor, a Facebook post” I’m at health home now “could be sent out. That is not necessarily useful, shows but how creative these networks can be.

It can of course also be more useful, for example, if the network creates a transition between a motion detector and the lighting elements in the smart health home. This results in much more practical synergies, which sometimes do not exist if the products come from different manufacturers or do not provide a basis for such scenes. Now IFTTT went a new way by releasing such scripts for developers and manufacturers.

These can integrate the typically creative IFTTT scripts into their own app and thus enable a bridge between different software and hardware, which otherwise would not be conceivable or simply not feasible in the smart health home. Previously, the creation of such scripts was much more complicated due to the necessary limitations and was only possible for the 0815 user after an extensive learning phase.

Another building block for the Internet of Things

Based on how it works, it is already clear that IFTTT could play a key role in the smart health home and the Internet of Things (IoT). Especially if you dare to take a cautious look into the future, where the Internet of Things means that more and more individual components should be networked and respond to each other in a smart way. At the same time, annoying hurdles in the smart health home are successfully and practically overcome. The typical consumer would have to worry less about whether the individual device actually works with another device or with certain external software.

However, these scripts are currently not an absolute all-purpose solution either, as a quick glance at the list of partners reveals. Among other things, IFTTT currently has no cooperation with one of the most popular companies in the smart health home sector: Apple. This is justified with a lack of resources, especially because a lengthy process is ahead of Apple’s HomeKit before any cooperation can actually take place – including external chips that have to be installed.
