Intel smartglasses could see the light soon

It is not impossible that Intel smartglasses will hit the market soon. The brand plans to launch augmented reality smartglasses this year.

These Intel smartglasses would therefore be the little sisters of the Project Alloy reality headset that Intel had discarded last year. After a short break, the company therefore seems to want to return to the augmented reality market.

Intel Superlite Vaunt smartglasses

Bloomberg reports that the company plans to launch a pair of AR smart glasses by the end of 2018. Internally, the glasses are called "Superlite" and are believed to be part of a new spin-off company that could be called Vaunt. Intel is currently looking to sell interests in this subsidiary company.

According to the report, Superlite glasses are manufactured by Quanta Computer; a company that is not new to the world of wearables and augmented reality. We only know a few details about smart glasses, such as the display of contextual information in the wearer's field of vision via a laser projector.

The smart glasses are aimed at the B2C market, but Intel has other plans in store in case things don't go as well as they expect. The company plans to supply technology to other manufacturers of AR glasses if Superlite consumer glasses cannot find their market. Intel is also ready to use the glasses as a demo object, to show what can be done with them, even if customers don't want them.

It is not surprising that the company has contingency plans in mind. Intel still faced many setbacks and also, like Project Alloy, had to close its wearable division at the end of last year.

However, all of these failures should allow him to focus on augmented reality. In addition, Intel acquired Recon Instruments in 2015. A company that was closed at the end of 2017 but whose team members have been moved to the Superlite project.
