Jawbone UP, modern and fun smart health connected bracelet

[ad_1]

The smart health connected bracelets are definitely on the rise: With the Fuelband from Nike and the Flex from Fitbit, Jawbone has also launched with its UP bracelet available on Amazon. The success of these smart health connected objects is so considerable that the 3 leaders each decided to launch a new version of their bracelet: the Fuelband SE, the Fitbit Force and the Jawbone UP24. If the latter has not yet been released in France, the editorial staff is already in the starting blocks to take the Review! But in the meantime, here is our full Jawbone UP Review.

After a failed start which forced the Californian startup to withdraw its bracelet from the sale and make reimbursements at the end of 2011, a new version of the Jawbone UP was released in 2012 (2013 in France) with this time, much better ambitions. Like its competitors, this smart health connected bracelet is above all a pedometer, which measures daily physical activity.

Jawbone UP: Getting started

The Jawbone UP is a simple and very designer bracelet, which stands out from its competitors by the fact that it does not have a screen. The material is pleasant to the touch, type "Soft touch". More elegant than its sporting competitors (although it is waterproof), it is very easy to wear with any type of clothing and makes much less "electronic gadget". Three sizes are available to suit everyone's wrists (S, M and L); it is also available in 8 different colors. Weighing only 22 grams, the pedometer nevertheless has a 10-day battery life (versus 6/7 for the Fuelband), for 80 minutes of charge only.

If it does not have an information screen, you can always check that your UP bracelet is correctly lit by consulting the two small LEDs on the bracelet: a sun (on) and a moon (in sleep mode). If you want to activate your bracelet, you will need to click on the activation button located at one end of the bracelet, and the "sun" light will appear. To deactivate it, you will have to click on the button again: this is the only operation on the bracelet.

At the other end of the bracelet, a jack will allow you to connect it to your mobile. Also note that this is the point so far only way to recover your data (no Bluetooth like the Fuelband), which is a bit annoying. Please note, not all phones are capable of supporting the UP bracelet, first consult the list of adapted mobile supports on the dedicated page of the Jawbone site. To recharge the bracelet, you will need to connect it with a Jack – USB adapter (supplied), which you should not lose. You have to choose between design and efficiency: the Jawbone UP is very design, while the Fuelband has the advantage of being more efficient with its integrated USB port.

Connection to the UP application

Jawbone UP app

Jawbone has developed an iOs and Android application to allow the recovery of the data recorded by the bracelet. Once installed, you will need to define your first goals, both in terms of activity and sleep. Do not be worried, advice on your goals will be provided (Ex: 7/8 hours of sleep, around 10,000 “steps” per day). As with the Fitbit app, you will also be able to add your diet. This step is tedious and a bit long, but you can then directly see the impact of your diet on your physical performance. At a minimum, try to stick to this list for a few weeks to understand how your body reacts. You can also give your mood of the day on the application, which once again will allow you to put performance in relation with it.

Available features

The UP bracelet is above all a pedometer, while the Fuelband strives to measure all your physical efforts (eg moving your arm). For those who would really like to have sport / physical performance, we recommend going for the Nike Fuelband, which is certainly more specific in that. The minimum target is 10,000 steps per day. On the other hand, where the UP differs from the Fuelband, it is on the ability to analyze sleep : it allows you to learn about your light / deep sleep phases, the time to fall asleep, the number of times you were awake etc. Big advantage: the bracelet also detects when you are awake: you no longer have to think in the morning to activate the "day" mode (you must, however, activate the night mode)! It also has a vibrating function, which can be used as an alarm clock : Depending on your sleep (deep or light), it will vibrate more or less strongly, and especially gradually. This functionality is also available for a "nap mode" (function Power Nap, based on a combination of pressing the button), which will wake you up after the period you set beforehand.

Jawbone UP Review: Our opinion

The Jawbone UP is a bracelet that is certainly less professional than the Nike Fuelband, but it corresponds to another audience: design and fun, the goal is to allow users to measure their effort in general, without extreme precision. The lack of display and the jack connection system have been sacrificed in favor of design. For city dwellers or executives, it must be recognized that there is much more "master key" in an office than a gadget like the Fuelband or Fitbit. Available on Amazon for € 123.41.

Also note that Jawbone has just announced the launch of an advanced version of the UP, the Jawbone UP24 which solves the connection problem: it will integrate Bluetooth 4.0, which allows objects to communicate without losing battery. Not available in France, you will have to wait to order a new bracelet, the price of which will be 149.99 US Dollars, or around 110 €.
