Lab – Economic programs of the Samsung QuickDrive WW10M86GNOA washing machine

[ad_1]

All washing machines benefit from an economic program, longer than the other cycles of the appliance so as not to consume too much electricity. The Samsung QuickDrive WW10M86GNOA has two.

The economic programs of washing machines are mainly intended to wash cotton at 40 ° C or 60 ° C. They justify their name by extending the cycle time so as not to consume too much electricity; the mechanical action of washing (the rotations of the drum which simulates the gestures of washerwomen) therefore lasts longer and must, in theory, compensate for the limited chemical action of the detergent in less hot water. Indeed, it is less energy consuming to rotate the drum than to heat the resistors. This is how some eco programs last more than six hours, such as that of the Whirlpool W Collection FRR12451 (exactly 386 minutes).

The Samsung QuickDrive WW10M86GNOA also has such a program that we tested like all the other cycles of this type on the other washing machines in our comparison. We therefore introduced 80% of the maximum load into the drum (8 kg of laundry) before starting it. We could not set it to 30 ° C since only the temperatures 60 ° C and 40 ° C were available. We therefore turned to the latter, the closest to 30 ° C. At the end of the 2 h 10 min (which is rather short for an eco cycle), the WW10M86GNOA had consumed 6.3 l / kg (50.4 l in total) of linen and 0.31 kWh.

The surprise

But by carefully observing the wheel of the WW10M86GNOA, we see that this washing machine has a second eco program. And the latter is a little more original than the average. First of all, it is shorter than a "traditional" eco cycle, but also shorter than a normal cycle on this model. Indeed, while the normal cotton program, loaded with 8 kg of laundry lasts 66 minutes on this model, the eco cycle requires only 58 minutes to reach its end. Second feature, it is a cold wash; the water is not heated at all. Finally, while the spin speed of the QuickDrive can reach 1600 rpm, it is here limited to 1200 rpm only.

We put 8 kg of laundry in the drum. After 58 minutes of washing, the WW10M86GNOA had consumed 0.135 kWh and 7.1 l / kg of laundry (i.e. 56.8 liters in total), which effectively makes it one of the eco cycles that consume the least water and electricity of our comparison.

Yes, but…

We lied to you a little, because we very slightly adapted the Review protocol for economic cycles. In general, we do not Review the washing efficiency of eco modes, the latter varying too much from one model to another due to the temperatures offered. Nevertheless, we did it on the WW10M86GNOA to be able to compare the two eco cycles of this model, and we therefore placed our famous stripes of spots at the heart of the load. And the result is final. Eco mode is unable to deal with difficult traces. And even dirt that leaves well in general (like theater blood) is still very visible. The eco-cotton mode is much more effective, and in particular eliminates the blood of theater.

And that's not all. The limitation of the drum speed necessarily influences the spin efficiency which is drastically reduced. Indeed, while at the end of the spin phase for a normal cycle, the laundry retains 4.75 kg of water in its fibers, it remains 6.55 kg for the eco cycle. The wire drying time is therefore inevitably lengthened, unless a spin is started again at 1600 rpm.

Explanation

The eco cycle of the WW10M86GNOA therefore did not convince us. And for good reason, it is not suitable for too large a quantity of laundry, which also confirms the reading of the manual which recommends a maximum load of 5 kg for this program.

The same cycle launched with a load of 3 kg of linen requires 0.18 kWh and 15.4 l / kg of linen (46.2 liters in total). The washing efficiency is better when the load is lower, even if there are still easy to remove stains. Spinning however remains as ineffective as there is 2.6 kg of water left in the fibers for an initial load of 3 kg of cotton.

Balance sheet

Eco mode is actually more economical because it washes cold. This may be enough for a light and lightly soiled load, but it will do nothing against difficult and encrusted stains. In addition, the conditions of use must be observed. If you really want to wash a lot of laundry without consuming too much energy, it is better to turn to the eco-cotton program, which proves to be more effective (since it washes in hot water), while managing to contain its electricity needs.
