Larcenauts comes to renew the genre of multiplayer FPS in VR with its Overwatch airs, finally an open door to e sports competitions in virtual reality.

In early May, Farpoint (PS VR) developer Impulse Gear unveiled its upcoming virtual reality (VR) title. A cross-platform multiplayer shooter: Larcenauts. If you know Overwatch (we already hear about Overwatch 2), imagine its adaptation in virtual reality and you will have a pretty good idea of what awaits you here.

History

Captain Eleanor Kas has assembled a team of robbers for a series of heists. The specialists are the best in the galaxy and come from all walks of life. 6v6 multiplayer and 8 characters to evolve

Continuing the trend of team shooting games, such as Population One or Contractors, Larcenauts allows you to compete in 6v6 matches. Originality in VR game and that each player has the choice among 8 specialists (or heroes) to compete in several game modes!

These offer players 8 classes of characters that everyone will choose according to their desire, but also the rest of the team. Indeed, certain skills of some are reinforced or complementary to that of another character.

Evolution of each specialist

As your character gains experience, you can customize your look (skins) and improve your skills. Thus, each specialist has 20 levels progress. This unlocks health, movement speed, ammo, and overload storage buffs. But also to unlock new slots for the power slates. Each character currently has 4 skins and assorted weapon skins.

You can further improve your hero’s performance with Power Slates. You can use up to two slates at a time (once slots are unlocked) and they will modify your weapons or abilities.

Winning games will also help you increase your notoriety, which serves for the individual ranking of each player. I suppose there will also be a quick ranking by Team for the competitions. The game also offers daily and weekly challenges to complete to speed up your progress.

Almost all characters have two weapons. This can be a dual wielding option of a weapon or a handgun to go with his primary weapon.

Each weapon in the game also has a secondary fire ability called “Overcharge”. You activate it by killing enemies to fill a meter.

A speedy infiltrator who uses quantum technology to sneak past without being seen.

Chi the medic

If his name sounds funny, Chi is a mysterious doctor from another world. Its mask inspired by Venetian doctors gives it a timeless style. He can create a zone of protection and regeneration of points of life for his allies. But also give individual protection to slow down enemy damage.

Thal the protective guardian

It is equipped with a personal energy-based shield, mounted on the hand, protects it from most forms of damage and absorbs a limited amount of damage.

3 game modes with 4 different maps

To keep the action fluid and exciting, several game modes are available in Larcenauts from launch:

DroneHack (capture the flag),

and the classic Deathmatch.

All of these modes will take place on four maps:

Relay is a relay station located in the remote regions of the 2G sector is the first target of the Larcenauts. Although it has been abandoned for many years, there are still a few caches of precious fuel scattered around the station. Larcernauts compatible helmets

The game is available for Oculus Quest and Rift (crossbuy) and SteamVR (crossplay). So, if you buy Larcenauts from the Oculus Store, Impulse Gear has confirmed support for cross-buying between the two headsets. I therefore advise you to favor this store if you are on Quest.

Release date

The studio has so far indicated that the launch is scheduled for “summer 2021”. However, the Oculus app shows a much more precise release date. In the headset, on the Oculus application of your smartphone or on the Oculus site, the Store displays the next releases. In the “Coming soon and preorders” section, the information indicates a release on Thursday, June 17, 2021. For us, it will therefore be available normally around 7 p.m., when the Oculus Store is updated.

First opinion on Larcenauts VR

Here is an excellent surprise, a collaborative FPS in 6v6 which comes to renew the genre by offering eight classes of characters with different and complementary skills, as well as 4 original maps from the launch. In fact it’s Overwatch in virtual reality and that I already love. Especially since we can easily imagine the addition of other heroes in Larcenauts over future updates.

The gameplay looks as good as the graphics and the fluidity.

Obviously, there remains the importance of membership in the game and the creation of a massive community of players (ideally French-speaking). But I think we have the best alternative to Population One.
