Litho – A small controller for the AR applications of your iPhone

Litho seems straight out of a science fiction film. This controller, currently available to developers, was developed by a team of three in the UK.

Litho combines motion control and haptic feedback features with a small underside trackpad. So you can use it with a combination of pointing, swiping, and tapping.

Nat Martin, head of the Litho design team, explains that the controller was designed with augmented reality glasses like Microsoft's; HoloLens. While it will eventually work with them, it is primarily built around Apple’s mobile augmented reality platform, ARKit. A demo ehealth shows users placing objects in an augmented reality iOS application. Another shows people controlling smart gadgets like thermostats without taking out their phones.

Most people are not looking for new phone and computer interfaces. Helmets like the HoloLens and Magic Leap One are far from being common and, in any case, these devices are already equipped with controllers. Litho will therefore have to hang on.

However, Nat Martin thinks that Litho has the winning formula. The development kit, made in very small quantities, costs $ 199. But he wants the end product to cost less than $ 100, so people can buy it; if only for occasional use.

But what else does Litho offer? According to Nat Martin, this precise and flexible mobile AR interface that does not block your view. Also, if Litho works with many applications, offering it can be quite interesting. Indeed, a controller for playing Pokémon Go only is available on the market for $ 50; expensive to use it only for that.

As you can see, the bet is ambitious and all this will also depend on the interest of the creators of applications.
