Microsoft Azure Kinect could power the next generation VR

Microsoft relaunches its Kinect with Microsoft Azure Kinect. Microsoft wants to make creating AI-based applications easier than ever with a new development kit that harnesses the power of Azure and HoloLens.

At its launch at MWC 2019 in Barcelona today, the IT giant unveiled the Microsoft Azure Kinect development kit; a unique device that brings together all of the company's high-end artificial intelligence sensors.

That's right: Kinect technology, which was originally developed to make gaming easier on Xbox, is reinforced by some powerful artificial intelligence tools; such as depth and motion detection technology.

Microsoft Azure Kinect can be used to help developers create services that help them better understand the physical world. Which means richer virtual and augmented reality experiences.

Using a new depth sensor developed for its newly announced helmet, HoloLens 2, Azure Kinect can accurately detect depth and accurately determine the movement of the human body. The sensor is combined with a high-definition RGB camera and a circular array of 7 microphones for even greater precision.

According to Microsoft, this could cover a wide range of use cases. The brand says, for example, a trial helps to detect patients who may experience a life-threatening fall while in hospital. Azure Kinect is used by a health technology company, Ocuvera, to determine the first clues from patients most at risk; and to inform a nurse to take care of them before they fall.

Pre-orders for Azure Kinect DK are open from $ 399, but only the United States and China will be able to pre-order them at first. Other countries are expected to follow soon.
