MIT is developing a smart health connected capsule to measure breathing and heart rate

The prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) yesterday released a report on a smart health connected capsule that would accurately measure the heart rate and breathing of its users. The capsule is based on the sound of the waves emitted by the heart and lung to detect an abnormal situation.

If "wearables" such as watches or bracelets smart health connected are already able to measure in real time the heart rate, force is to recognize that they are not always very comfortable to wear. A smart health connected capsule would allow patients to circumvent the wearing of a non-stop bracelet, while being closely monitored in the evolution of their pathology. Such a capsule could remain in the digestive tract between one and two dayssays the experts.

Equipped with a microphone, the capsule developed by American researchers is able to analyze the waves emitted by the lung and the heart, to detect any abnormal heart rate or respiratory problem. Attached to MIT's Lincoln Laboratory, researcher Albert Swiston sums up the concept pretty well: the capsule is a kind of "tiny stethoscope that you can swallow". All the challenge of the experiment is then to manage to separate the different recorded sounds, including that of the digestive tract which proves particularly noisy and regular.

But MIT does not want to stop there, and intends to go even further in its experiments: the research director Giovanni Traverso explains that he wants to use this capsule as a tool to discover other molecules or diseases, and allow a quick diagnosis.

MIT researchers pointed out in their studies that such a solution could eventually be used in a sporting environment, as we have already seen in Nantes, where the players of the football team use them to measure the effects of their means of recovery.
