Moisturizing the skin – Soon wearables to measure it!

We too often neglect to hydrate properly. Yet this is a topic of crucial importance today. The University of North Carolina will soon offer a wearable able to tell you in real time if the hydration of your body is too low.

Measure hydration in real time

Every day, we should drink between 1.5 and 2 liters of water. But how many of us really do it? Too few. The water itself does not provide protein, no carbohydrates … But it remains essential to the proper functioning of our body. The University of North Carolina wants to help us measure our needs in real time.

The concept is simple. A wearable who embeds electrodes that translate the electrical state of the skin into a measure of moisture. This object could be declined in bracelet or patch. An application on your smartphone, tablet or laptop would then be responsible for retrieving the data and informing you that it is time to drink water. For now, the project is not yet marketable, but tests reveal that the prototype is reliable. The objects have for the moment been tested on artificial skins by significantly varying hydration levels. An essential methodology to ensure that humidity does not disturb the sensors. You can use it as much at the gym as at health home or during a hike.

Hydration, a theme of public health

Just take a few years back to realize the importance of hydration. In 2003, a huge heat wave, had made nearly 20,000 dead in France. Among the first people affected, infants but also the elderly. Faced with the resurgence of this phenomenon due to global warming, finding solutions becomes a real theme of public health. Some retirement homes also took action last year. They deployed Auxiviva, a smart health connected glass. It has a chip to track the amount of water drunk in the day. A diode also reminds them to drink regularly.

If no date of marketing is still envisaged, we have however an order of idea for the tariff. According to its creators, this should to be a Fitbit bracelet. From € 60 for affordable to € 220 for the most complex models. Note that there is a possible comparison. Late last year, BSX Athletics launched funding for LVL, a smart health connected bracelet that also measures hydration. Netizens then contributed over a million dollars! The price announced by the company was 199 dollars for his bracelet. However, it includes other features: his heart rate, his mood, the number of steps taken and the amount of calories burned.
