Morphee + presents an electromagnetic device for the detection of falls
Present in the alleys of Eureka Park in Las Vegas for the entire duration of CES (from January 7 to 10), the Dijon start-up Morphee + develops, industrializes and markets the electromagnetic device of the same name intended for monitoring and detection fall in real time for residents of accommodation establishments for dependent elderly people (Ehpad) and patients at health home.
Born from the meeting, in 2014, between Bruno Duperrier, entrepreneur and expert in the field of seniors, and Florin Paun, responsible for development within the National Office for Aerospace Studies and Research (Onera), the company, officially created in May 2018, made the trip to CES to present its solution to visitors to the digital high mass and to attract potential partners.
“We came to CES to forge new partnerships, gain visibility and find international growth opportunities,” the co-founder and managing director of the company.
In 2019, Morphee + entered into a partnership with Japanese suppliers, the country with the most elderly people in the world.
Concretely, Morphee + is developing a “radar”, similar to those traditionally reserved for the military for collision warning. Adapted to the medical sector, it offers a monitoring system to non-invasively monitoring the patient’s vital functions such as respiration or heart rate.
“Today, most of the existing measurement techniques require the wearing of a device, which proves to be invasive for the patients. We wanted to avoid this. What is more, the wearing of sensors can interfere or modify the behavior of the person whose health surveillance is to be carried out “, detailed Bruno Deperrier.
A contactless measurement via a radar addresses this problem and the device can also monitoring the heart or respiratory rhythms of several patients at the same time. smart health connected, this radar alerts medical teams or caregivers if the patient being monitored falls.
The intelligent patient monitoring system, essentially in nursing homes or at health home, consists of a pack of physical sensors (microcomputer and wireless communication module) integrated in manufacturing in a vertical plinth (or metal rod) ready to stick to the wall and connect at the bottom to the mains power supply.
Signal processing software installed in the microcomputer makes it possible to extract simple data from the received electromagnetic signal:
presence / absence of the person in the different areas of the room
presence / absence of movement
statistics on the speed of these movements
respiratory and heart rates
waking or sleeping state of the person.
Information processing software is integrated for decision-making on the need for intervention by assisting staff following a fall, awakening or preparation for the resident’s rising and collecting and using physical parameters measured in order to detect pathologies or adapt the prescription by the referring doctor.
The solution has several advantages highlighted by Morphee +. The contactless system addresses the problem of forgetting and rejecting worn sensors, and it does not record an image, protecting the privacy of patients and caregivers and the confidentiality of treatment procedures.
It also makes it possible to keep people at health home longer in safety, to reduce costs in accommodation by automating part of the recordings or readings (currently carried out manually by caregivers) such as the monitoring of cardiac and respiratory data, and provides alerts on the negative effects of certain treatments.
“Next April, two Ehpad in France will be equipped with these solutions,” Bruno Deperrier announced .

Declining economic model
The economic model of the Morphee + system “varies according to the nature of the establishment, public or private, lucrative, associative, etc.”, described the co-founder of the Dijon start-up.
“We have a business model for each of these cases. It can either be a rental or an acquisition of our system in the event that establishments are allocated renewable credits from regional health agencies (ARS), for example “, he added.
“The rates vary according to the number of rooms since we have costs that are shared. The more rooms we equip in an Ehpad for example, the more the costs are ultimately reduced,” said Bruno Deperrier without revealing his rates.
The company, which has 4 employees, launched the industrialization of its made in France solution, which it hopes to see adopted by the medico-social world, health home hospitalization (HAD) and the disability sector in 2020.
It is already compiling a series of prizes for its innovation. Winner of the “coup com coeur” 2018 prize from the jury of the French Society of Telemedicine (SFT), she was also selected from the 100 French SMEs led by the network of chambers of commerce and industry CCI International to prospect customers and partners in Japan in 2019.
Accelerated by the Polytechnique X-Up incubator, Morphee + is doing its second CES after having participated in the World Medical Innovation Forum in Boston in April 2019.
