munevo DRIVE – wheelchair control with Smartglass technology

Not every wheelchair user is able to control their wheelchair with their hands, as with a hand joystick. Physically impaired people are therefore increasingly dependent on the help of other or expensive special controls, which can be difficult to operate. The Munich-based start-up company munevo has developed a smartglass application with munevo DRIVE that makes it possible to control electric wheelchairs using head movements. The only requirement is an electric wheelchair that is compatible with the munevo adapter and smartglass data glasses.

munevo DRIVE – Smartglass app and adapter for electric wheelchairs

The so-called smart glasses are data glasses that are equipped with sensors as well as with a display and a camera. However, the real innovation of the new control system from munevo is the Smartglass app developed by the company. The application, which also bears the name munevo DRIVE, uses the sensors built into the smart glasses to translate the head movements of the wheelchair user into control signals.

Furthermore, the app is flexible and can be adapted to the gestures that the wheelchair user wants to use or is able to carry out as control signals. munevo DRIVE can thus respond to the individual needs and preferences of the user. The possibilities of wheelchair control that this creates are extremely simple: For example, a single nod is enough to start using the electric wheelchair.

When developing its system, munevo placed great value on intuitive controls that are as easy to learn as possible. This is also reflected in the user interface of the application, which can be seen on the screen of the smart glasses while driving. Colored arrows, for example, always show exactly in which direction you are moving.

To ensure that the munevo system works, the start-up munevo has developed a special adapter that must be attached to the respective wheelchair. The adapter serves as an interface for signal transmission to the wheelchair. The great advantage of the adapter is its great compatibility – it can be smart health connected to a large part of the common electric wheelchair models. In addition, the adapter can be easily attached via plug-and-play, which is why no complex installation takes place.

munevo DRIVE – functions for more security and mobility

In addition to the actual wheelchair control, the munevo app also offers other functions. In this way, it is possible to send a notification and the associated location information to a predetermined person in the event of an emergency. In addition, photos can be easily taken and shared using the app. In the future, users should also be able to control PCs, smartphones, tablets and smart health home systems using munevo. Further features that enable wheelchair users to be more mobile and more independent are to follow.

Here, modern technology is used in an intelligent way in an area where it can move a lot. Another big advantage is the high compatibility of the necessary adapter. Almost every owner of an electric wheelchair can benefit from the intuitive control. It is to be hoped that munevo DRIVE will prevail on the market.
