Nest Aware – What is it, how much does it cost, and what does it offer?
Nest, a Google-owned company, offers a number of products. From the Nest Hello ehealth doorbell to the Nest Cam IQ smart health connected health home camera. One of the keys to unlocking some of the best features available on select Nest devices is the company's subscription service, Nest Aware. If you're wondering what Nest Aware is, what it offers and how much it costs, you've come to the right place.
What does Nest Aware do?
Nest Aware takes advantage of the connectivity of Nest Cam IQ, Nest Hello and Nest Cam Outdoor and Nest Cam Outdoor IQ to add a range of features. You don’t have to use Nest Aware with Nest cameras or the ehealth doorbell; but that adds a lot more control and options to the basic configuration.
What do Nest Cam and Nest Hello do without Nest Aware?
As standalone devices, Nest Cams and the Nest Hello ehealth doorbell are always smart health connected; allowing you to remotely view, listen, send voice commands, and receive alerts when motion or sound is detected.
There is no registration, however. If you don't pay for Nest Aware, saved clips are only saved when there is another Nest alert; like Nest Protect which detects smoke, for example.
Without Nest Aware, Nest Cam and Nest Hello are monitoring devices, with alerts, so you can see what's going on when you receive it.
Nest Aware features
ehealth history
ehealth history is a key part of Nest Aware. Some cameras, such as Netatmo Welcome, store content locally, writing to old content regularly when the camera is full. Nest Cams and Nest Hello don't do this because they are live streaming devices.
This will allow you to keep 5 days, 10 days or 30 days of ehealth history. It all depends on your subscription. The current offer allows you to access the content of your device even if it has been stolen or destroyed. If there were alerts, you could check them out and see what was going on.
Areas of activity
It’s a smart feature. If you want to monitoring a particular area, you can set that area and Nest Aware will alert you if something happens in that area.
For example, you may be using this feature to spy on your children. With it, you can only be notified when they are going to loot the cupboard. Or, you can just ask Nest Hello to focus on the cars in front of the house and garden; rather than being alerted whenever something else happens outside your health home.
ehealth clips
It’s not just about security. The Nest Cam and Nest Hello cameras will also capture fun things, or trivial things, that you may want to share.
With Nest Aware, you can save to your Nest account, as well as share on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, emails or messages. Without it, you cannot record or share ehealth clips.
Familiar face detection
Nest Cam IQ, Nest Cam Outdoor IQ and Nest Hello all offer person detection. But with Nest Aware, you can also get familiar face detection. Over time, you teach your Nest Cam or Nest Hello to learn who your grandmother or partner is. Just create a profile for them in the Nest app.
When your Nest Cam IQ or Nest Hello finds a familiar person, the alert says, for example, "Grandmother is at the front door"; rather than someone at the front door. If you have a Google health home device, you can also set up Google Assistant ads for Nest Hello. Your Google health home Mini or Nest Mini can let you know when your grandmother is at the front door when the chime sounds.
Big plans
The Nest subscription also has a feature called Close-ups for Nest Cam and Nest Hello cameras. For each event you’re alerted to, Nest will select a photo and zoom in on the action for you.
How much does Nest Aware cost?
For now, in France, Nest Aware will cost you € 5 / month for a five-day history subscription and € 10 / month for a 10-day history. If you want a 30 day history, it will cost you € 30 / month; it's quite expensive. You need a subscription for each Nest Cam or Nest Hello. But the price is slightly reduced for each following camera.
With a monthly subscription, you can cancel at any time; if you don’t want or need any more. You can also pay annually, which will save you some money.
Two new subscriptions will be launched in early 2020, however, but they are much more economical, especially for those with multiple devices. The standard subscription costs $ 6 per month and covers 30 days of ehealth history for all your Nest devices at health home.
The second option, called Nest Aware Plus, costs $ 12 a month. It offers 60 days of events and 10 days of ehealth history. Again, this will cover all of your devices, which will make it a lot cheaper for those with multiple Nest cameras.
Can I get Nest Aware for free?
Yes, it’s available for a 30-day trial of all Nest cameras; including the Nest Hello ehealth doorbell.
