Is Netgear Orbi Wifi 6 worth it?A solid wifi pour everyone in complete safety
Netgear Orbi Wifi 6 A solution to benefit from all your connected devices at the same time, without loss of performance, without bringing your wireless network to its knees, and having increased protection with Netgear Armor.
The wifi makes it possible to connect all the devices of the house to the internet and that without having to resort to unsightly cables. This wifi est defined by wireless communication standards. And what we did with wifi ten years ago has nothing to do with what we are asking of it today. There est no longer seulement access to the internet or sending two or three e-mails that we ask pour, but to have all our “smart” and therefore connected objects communicate. And we have more than we think. One day we connect an object like a light bulb or a socket and then we forget it. A month later, it’s his new phone that we connect to wifi or a printer. And here we are easily in a family at the head of fifty devices communicating with each other in silence. With the arrival of voice assistants (Alexa, Siri, Google Assistant, etc.) reacting in real time, the power demanded from the network has increased tenfold. What est more, with the development of fiber, it est no longer rare to have access to more than a gigabyte of speed to connect to the Internet. And to be able to redistribute all this power to all devices, the switch from the wifi 5 standard to the wifi 6 standard should not be considered a fantasy.
The answer to the control of this debauchery of power est given to us by the American Netgear who est reviewing its Orbi RBK50 6-antenna Tri-Band WiFi Mesh Router solution by offering its Orbi RBK852 8-antenna system equipped, among other things, with a more powerful processor.
Safe
It est at this time that the most cautious will fear pour their health. We are assured at Netgear, wifi 6 est not more harmful than wifi 5. It has no reason to worry because it uses the same radio frequency bands as the previous wifi (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), like the rest of the box operator landscape deployed in France by operators. With the new wifi 6 standard, we only increased the speed of the routers to feed all the objects, but their transmission power remained the same. CE standards are also there to ensure compliance. Quiet?
This communication system est not, however, free from criticism. Among these, you should know that the frequencies used in wifi are not intended to pass through thick walls or windows unlike those used in mobile telephony. Netgear therefore had the idea of freeing itself from the environment by creating a satellite pour its range of Orbi routers. This est not a repeater: the Orbi base connects to your wired box (Orange, Free, Bouygues, SFR, etc.) and becomes the new source of wifi in the house. As pour the satellite (the second module), it est used as a relay to distill the wifi further up the floors. This est called WiFi mesh. By moving a wifi device around the house, it will automatically connect with the nearest module.
Simplicity and security
Nothing complicated to set up since an application takes charge of taking us by the hand to configure the system. There est practically nothing to do pour the neophyte who will not want to push his investigations further. The more daring can go to the web administration interface in order to be able to control everything. We therefore install the main module connected to its box and an additional module elsewhere in the house which will communicate with the first transparently pour full coverage. Easy. The modules, rather elegant and design, blend into your interior without difficulty.
The biggest danger therefore does not come, Netgear tells us, from invisible waves supposed to pass through our body right through but from the possibility pour a few evil-doers to take control of your devices from the outside. Who has never been anxious to be observed by his own surveillance camera? Our connected objects, as we know, are not immune to security breaches. This est why the Orbi system integrates the Netgear Armor solution powered by Bitdefender, a major player in computer security solutions, in order to protect devices connected to your home network. This software can be installed on our various devices such as our smartphones or computers and will also filter what enters our network to protect us from viruses, malware, phishing, and even against theft, since it can geolocate your devices, make them ring. remotely, and even erase the data if necessary. To access it, you will still need to take out a subscription. But security and tranquility are priceless.

Design And Technical Specifications
On the design side, the Netgear Orbi Wifi 6 retains the elliptical tower shape we knew from Wifi 5 models like the RBK50 and RBK20. The brand still modifies the design to mark this model in the new era of Wifi 6. We therefore find a slightly larger model where the dominant white is kept with a metallic base which serves as a base and which goes around of the router. An LED strip also goes around the router, but the status light only remains on the lower part.
Unlike the majority of Mesh routers which seek to be as discreet as possible to easily integrate into any room of the house, the Netgear Orbi Wifi 6 and its 25cm high will have difficulty blending in in the background.
The Netgear Orbi AX6000 is sold in a pack of 2 or in a pack of 3 under the names RBK852 and RBK853. Router and satellites are aesthetically identical but cannot be reversed.
Each unit is equipped with 4 1GbE LAN ports and the router also has a 2.5GbE WAN port. Unlike the Asus ZenWiFi XT8 which is our favorite mesh router, the Orbi does not have a USB port to be able to connect a printer or a hard drive.
All access points are equipped with the same components with a quad-core 2.2GHz processor and eight internal antennas. The router (RBR850) has 1GB of RAM and 512MB of flash memory. The Netgear Orbi Wifi 6 is an AX6000 tri-band router with a maximum speed of 1200Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 2400Mbps on each of the two 5GHz bands. As with ZenWiFi, one of the 5GHz bands is reserved for backhaul, that is to say for communication between router and satellite (RBS850), which allows the other two bands to be unblocked for connected devices.
The Netgear Orbi 6 takes advantage of all the specificities of Wifi 6 with in particular MU-MIMO, beamforming but does not however have a 160MHz channel. The Orbi RBK852 with a router and a satellite can cover up to 350m2 in Wifi while the RBK853 with a router and two satellites covers up to 525m2. This Orbi 6 is therefore above all designed for large homes with many connected devices. It is capable of broadcasting up to 12 simultaneous WiFi signals to more than 60 connected devices.
Getting Started
The installation of the Netgear Orbi RBK852 Wifi 6 is very simple, just like what we are now used to seeing on all WiFi routers. All you have to do is follow the instructions by going through the Orbi mobile app and scanning the QR Code on the underside or from a web interface by going to orbilogin.com.
Connect the router to your box for the app to detect the system. You can then install the satellite (s) in the rooms of your choice, name your network and assign it a password. About ten minutes later the Orbi is ready for use.
The Netgear Orbi Wifi 6 LED lights up green when the router is powered on, yellow when it reboots, and red when the internet connection is lost. Flashing red will mean there is a problem with the firmware. The satellite LED lights up in blue for 3 minutes when the connection with the router is good and in yellow when it can be improved. Finally, a red color on the satellite means that the access point has failed to synchronize with the router.
Unlike the Orbi Wi-Fi 5 range whose different models worked with each other, these are not compatible with this new version. As the standard differences are too great, if you already have a Netgear Orbi you cannot use it as a satellite with the Orbi RBK852.
Performance
Before moving on to the performance of this Orbi Wifi 6, let’s quickly recall what a Mesh router is. Composed of at least two elements, the main router is responsible for transmitting a WiFi signal like any WiFi router. The peculiarity of Mesh, also called mesh WiFi network, is that one or more satellites positioned in different places in its home will be responsible for relaying the WiFi signal to extend its range. We explain this in more detail in our guide to Mesh routers.
If you are not yet familiar with Netgear Mesh routers, remember that the brand was one of the first to position itself on the market and that the Orbi RBK50, despite a few years on the clock, remains the benchmark for Mesh in Wifi 5 in terms of performance and signal strength. Our expectations were therefore quite high for this new Orbi version.
By only connecting the RBR850 router, we recorded an average speed of 835Mbps near the router and 776Mbps within 15 meters of the router. This is a small disappointment since it is a little worse than the Asus ZenWiFi XT8.
When we added an RBS850 satellite, we reached 820Mbps next to the satellite and still 776Mbps at 15 meters, a very low power loss.
And that’s where the Orbi RBK852 really shines. The signal strength is impressive and even at the other end of the garden we continued to receive sufficient signal to surf online.
Settings and functions
Netgear’s mobile application allows you to manage your Orbi on a daily basis. Clear and well done, navigation is pleasant. The same cannot be said of the Web interface which retains a somewhat archaic look and whose aesthetic we would have liked to see reworked on the occasion of this move to Wifi 6. You will not have any. other choices than to go there if you want to dig into the settings parameters, those available on the app are only limited to basic settings.
The mobile application for Android and iOS opens on a home screen which gives us the status of the Orbi, the number of connected devices as well as the shortcut to the main management tools.
Netgear Orbi Wifi 6 home screen
The Device Manager will allow you to get the list of devices connected to the network, their security level and the node on which they are connected.
Orbi devices
The Internet Speed shortcut allows you to obtain real-time speed of your connection.
Netgear Orbi Wifi 6 speed test
Network Mapping lists the clients connected to each point and provides details such as firmware version or IP and MAC address.
Netgear Orbi Wifi 6 network mapping
The Wifi settings group together the security parameters while the Network statistics menu provides access to daily data consumption.
The web interface provides access to all the settings we have just seen but also to more extensive controls. It will then be possible to access QoS. QoS it only has the name since it is not possible to prioritize traffic by device or by type of activity as should allow a quality of service worthy of this.
Netgear orbi rbk853 web interface
You can also configure Dynamic DNS, set up fixed IPs, do port forwarding, etc. The Orbi RBK853 can also act as a VPN server with OpenVPN.
As on the other Orbi models that we tested, this Orbi Wifi 6 offers the BitDefender antivirus which will block malicious websites, send an alert to your smartphone in the event of a threat and which will above all be able to be installed on your PC or your smartphone / tablet. Perfect at first sight. Except that this antivirus is only offered for a period of 3 months and you will have to pay the modest sum of $69.99 per year to continue to enjoy it after the trial period. When you invest close to $800 for a Mesh router, you would expect at least to benefit from some premium features! Especially on the Asus ZenwWiFi, the antivirus is integrated for a purchase cost of almost 300 € lower.
The excellent Circle parental controls developed by Disney are usually offered on all Orbi until the entry-level RBK13 was surprisingly not available on the RBK852 at the time of our test. We talked about it at length here and it is one of the strengths of the brand. Fortunately, Netgear plans to add it via a firmware update, but we don’t know exactly when. The only possibility for now is to go to the web interface to create access ranges and manually enter the sites to be blocked. Suffice to say that this is not what you can call parental control.
Conclusion
The Netgear Orbi Wifi 6 may perform well and deliver speeds that we are not used to seeing with Wifi 5, but it is no exception in the world of Wifi 6.
With such a high price – one of the most expensive on the market – we would expect premium features, but unfortunately this is far from the case. The control options are more advanced than a lot of other Mesh routers but the temporary lack of parental controls, the QoS flush with the daisies and the paid antivirus make the choice of this very high-end positioning crazy.
At a much lower price, the Asus ZenWiFi XT8 offers all the features mentioned, a configurable third band and a USB port. In short, this Netgear Orbi Wifi 6 is good, make no mistake, but we would have liked better or cheaper.
