Presence phases and networking in Berlin

Attendance weeks in the first and second semesters as well as a presence weekend at the end of the third semester in Berlin Mitte, near the main train station, enable close contact with other students and with the internal and external speakers. This is the basis for a network that connects and supports lecturers and students with cooperation partners and sponsors in the long term.

The attendance week at the beginning of the first and second semesters comprises 5 days (Monday to Friday), from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The first week of attendance primarily serves as an introduction to the course and a first look at the four modules. In the second week of attendance, the accompanying project seminar will be more focused, and there will also be a deepening into the modules of the course. At the end of the third semester, all students present their master theses (completed or started) in a science slam. There will also be a presence weekend in Berlin for two days (Saturday and Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Participants bear the costs of travel and accommodation themselves. The course coordinator supports you when booking a hotel.

Modules and content briefly explained

eHealth Literacy: The module conveys the basics, basic terms, models and definitions of eHealth literacy and their importance for information and communication with various communication partners. The students discuss the different factors that influence health and eHealth literacy and analyze how important these factors are for patient empowerment and shared decision making. The participants also learn about various strategies to support communication in low eHealth literacy. In the online seminars, concrete case studies are analyzed and discussed, e.g. Clinics, medical practices, associations, health insurance companies, universities, media, non-profit and profit organizations as well as the benefits in the context of science and research e.g. in data management and big data.

eHealth Communication: The module provides in-depth insight into health communication and methods of digital knowledge transfer to laypersons – especially patients – but also to other specialists and institutions. What knowledge needs and needs do different people involved in discussions have in health care? And how can the students accomplish this using digitized communication? In the online seminars, dealing with informed patients, controversial topics or communication with digital formats adapted to eHealth literacy as well as the area of tension between everyday knowledge and evidence-based knowledge, relevant actors and eHealth as a means of networking are discussed. Various means of communication and their user requirements are analyzed, e.g. in the context of telemedicine or social media.

eHealth Applications: The module provides an overview of various specific eHealth technologies and current national and international developments. The technical basics and possibilities of various eHealth applications and their possible uses are discussed, including Networks (central, decentralized – blockchain), data management, telemedicine, health apps, information systems, forums, chats and social media. The students take a critical look at current and future networks, also with regard to different organizational forms (e.g. differences between clinics, medical practices, health insurance companies and other non-profit and profit organizations) and discuss possible areas of application for eHealth applications.

eHealth implementation: The module conveys knowledge about the structures of the German health care system and its legal and economic basic conditions, especially with regard to eHealth applications. Legal bases (data sovereignty, data protection, data security) and ethical questions (quantified self, big data, digital traces of users) are discussed, as well as external quality assurance and internal quality management in their importance for the use of eHealth offers and vice versa – eHealth use for management tasks – analyzed.

Project Seminar: The students develop and document a practical project in small groups. They analyze an existing eHealth application or develop (a concept for) an eHealth application for a particular preferred non-profit organization. The lecturers accompany and support the development of the practical project in order to recognize critical project phases at an early stage and to solve them in terms of internal management. The various project teams as well as the individual project members communicate with each other via chats and the forum.

Master thesis: The students write one in the third semester Master thesis on a complex and interdisciplinary question. In doing so, they include all of the content learned during their studies and apply it in concrete terms. An accompanying colloquium supports them in this.
