Two new words translated from English enter the Official Journal

In the weekend of March 4-5, 2017, the Anglo-American terms "text neck" and "quantified self", defined and translated by the General Commission for Terminology and Neology, were published in the Official Journal. Thus, the "text neck", an evil that strikes addicts on the small screen, has been translated by the expression "torticollis of the mobile", and defined as a " neck pain that may radiate into the shoulders and upper limbs (…) due to the intensive use of a small screen such as that of a mobile phone or tablet ".

The “quantified self”, translated by “smart health connected self-measurement” is presented as a practice allowing a person to “ measure itself with smart health connected objects physiological variables concerning it, relating in particular to its nutrition, its physical activities or its sleep ". These objects can be a watch, a pedometer or a mobile phone.

Objective: French language technology as much as possible

The General Commission for Terminology and Neology, which is part of a system established by the decree of July 3, 1996, aims to create terms and expressions to fill in the gaps in French vocabulary. Its mission is to designate in the language of Molière concepts that appear under foreign names, most often in Anglo-American, especially in the technical, economic and scientific fields.

Once the terms translated and defined by the Commission are published in the Official Journal, they become mandatory for use in government departments and establishments.
