Novus – A Smartphone Watch and Modular Smart Speaker

The Chinese company Abardeen has just unveiled Novus. A wearble consisting of four components (including one optional). The first is the Novus Core, a 4G-compatible Android-compatible Apple Watch module containing the screen and all phone / watch technology. As the name suggests, this is the heart of the configuration of this wearable polymorph.

The Novus Core is either inserted into the monitoring module (convenient for children who are inclined to lose objects such as phones, and can be inserted into the phone module housing (which also adds two extra battery days). phone uses a touch wheel, similar to conventional iPods, to control the object and scroll through the on-screen menus.

Novus is a bit of a metamorph

At health home, the Core + phone module can be inserted into the optional docking module. It not only recharges the batteries of the Core and the phone module, but transforms the set into what Abardeen calls an "artificial loudspeaker". It's more than a charging station with a loudspeaker. This is a smart speaker compatible with Google Assistant; as well as a standalone alarm clock and an intelligent night light that illuminates when it detects motion via its infrared sensor.

One of the obstacles for children's smartphone technology developers is that children and parents often have very different needs and tastes. Abardeen believes he has taken up the challenge with Novus by incorporating features and a form factor that kids will find useful and enjoyable; while providing parents with the functionality and security they want.

Children and parents at the center of reflection

"When we decided to build Novus, we wanted to use the latest technologies available and apply them to the unique needs of a child and his parents. Said Jacko Liu, CEO of Abereen.

On the children's side, the Novus is equipped with a fitness monitor. There is also a camera activated by video call, a music player and video. There is also the opportunity to partner locally with other Novus owners. Finally, an SOS function makes it possible to call a predefined number, as well as the usual call and SMS functions, including a predefined SMS response function; all of this is enabled or restricted through the parent's KidMate app.

And although the video shows that the wearable is waterproof, this is not quite the case. The company has corrected the Kickstarter page; indicating that the product was water resistant, with an IP65 degree of protection. The Novus is simple to configure. Once the SIM card is inserted and the device is turned on, the Novus displays a QR code on the screen, which the parent scans via the KidMate application.
