What do you look for when you buy a watch? To this question, most will simply answer a beautiful object, others a technical and worked movement. Now, a new feature comes into play: connectivity. This greatly expands the functions previously available on a traditional watch. More and more brands tend to offer the best of both worlds and this is the case of Nowa with its model Shaper. Born of the meeting between a designer and an engineer experienced in watchmaking, this young French brand creates hybrid smart health connected watches, simple but smart, elegantly combining fashion and technology. For this first approach, we got the Shaper in its Classic Black finish:

Review

Most of the time, we can judge the quality of a piece by looking at the packaging in which it reaches us. Roughly, so we can say that the more it is worked, the more it contains quality. Here, the Nowa watch comes to us in a black rectangular box. Very sober (it is only engraved with the name of the brand), it opens with a lid. Inside, there is a thick piece of foam using all the depth. Two compartments are dug: the first contains the authenticity card of the watch and an explanatory booklet, the second shows, which is also attached around a piece of foam allowing it to maintain itself properly.

"Less is more. A classic design watch reinterpreted for modern life. It's hard to summarize this watch better! Indeed, and before looking at the technical characteristics of the model, I took a moment to observe it as a whole. And the motto is clearly "sobriety". The case, brushed steel and sandblasted 36L 40 millimeters in diameter, is relatively thin and almost completely disappears (the flat bezel is for something) to make way for an imposing dial.

Pure white, it comes down to the following characteristics: black hour markers, the name of the brand, a small blue circle at six o'clock and the hands, also blue. On the right of the case, a dummy crown serves as the final button. This one is used for the part connectivity part (which I detail in the part "Review"). Finally, the bottom is engraved with a special serial number and specific to the model that one has in the hands.

With this watch, Nowa wants to associate several notions in one and the same object. In fact, each element has been fashioned so that it gives the piece an elegant style but also timeless. If this goes of course by the dial, the bracelet is not in rest. Made in a full grain black leather with a light grain and lined with flesh-colored nubuck, it is relatively thin. It ends with a single 316L steel buckle engraved with the name of the brand. Very simple, it brings the touch of refinement that is necessary to the timepiece.

Fitting

As mentioned above, the case of this Nowa is 40 millimeters. We are here in the presence of a standard size! What also suits me since having a relatively strong wrist, a watch may seem too small once I wear it. And it's a bit the feeling I have today, because this model is really very thin, whether on the thickness of its case as that of his bracelet. But there is only one way to know it, it is by wearing it!

Once on the wrist, my doubts fade. The dial occupies the space well without giving the effect of a clock hanging at the end of my arm. The leather of the bracelet, very flexible, adapts perfectly to my morphology. Rather light (about 50 grams), it is quickly forgotten after a few minutes of wearing. But let's move on to what makes this watch interesting, its connectivity! And at first glance, nothing suggests any interaction with a smartphone.

First and foremost, download the Nowa app, available on both Ios and Android. Once installed, she suggests us to associate a watch. To do this, simply press the press button. Thus, a small red circular diode appears on the dial at noon. It flashes seven times. After a few seconds, the watch and the phone are paired.

Fluid and intuitive, the application is divided into three distinct categories. The first is of course the one gathering all our data related to various activities. Thus, we will find the steps but also the distance traveled, the duration of the activity and the calories spent day after day. This category also measures sleep by relying on light sleep, deep sleep, and waking periods.

The second category includes widgets that carries the watch. We then find several specific features such as call alert, call rejection, find your phone, daily goal, the ability to synchronize our results with Google Fit (or Apple Health) and the remote shutter release. . Note that this one works with the crown of the watch and that you will have to press on it to take a picture. Finally, the last category is interested in the watch itself. It concentrates several information like the name that we gave to our Shaper or the amount of remaining battery. It is also via this category that we set the time. It will automatically adjust according to our position on the globe, convenient not to be confused by traveling to the other side of the world!

In an increasingly competitive market, each brand is trying to differentiate itself by the design of the watch it offers, its functions and the interface of its application. For me the highlight of this Nowa is clearly its design, which is close to a traditional watch, and that we can wear every day whatever our outfit. I like its sleek design, its timeless style and the touch of modernity brought by the use of blue. This is the only detail that can suggest that it is indeed a smart health connected watch. As for the functions, this Shaper offers us the essential of what one is entitled to expect from this type of watches. But there is for example no calculation of heart rate and the interface of the application is still enough perfectible. Proposed at 199 €, this watch will seduce those who seek above all a beautiful object, coupled with a monitoring of activities for the daily, and also underline the proposed, in a budget that is reasonable!
