our opinion on the film

The film Zodi and Tehu, brothers of the desertwhich we owe to Éric Barbier, screenwriter of Young Peril and director of The promise of dawn and of Little country, takes us on a journey in the footsteps of a young nomad who embarks on a mad odyssey to allow his dromedary to become a champion.

Zodi and Tehu, brothers of the desert, the story

Zodi, a 12-year-old Moroccan boy, lives with Amina, his mother, in the Sahara desert. He is the only child of his tribe to go to school. One day, on his way to class, he comes face to face with a baby camel that has been separated from its mother after an attack by poachers. He baptizes him Tehu. Suspicious and fearful, Téhu refuses to live in the company of other animals, and only calms down alongside Zodi, whom he follows everywhere, even when he is sleeping or studying.

Soon, a tragedy falls on the members of his community: a serious epidemic affects their entire herd of dromedaries. By order of Julia, the French veterinarian, all must be euthanized. Only Tehu, who was not contaminated because he never mixed with the group, is spared. In order to reassure Zodi and his family, Julie explains to them that Téhu could ensure their economic survival. He has all the physical qualities to become a crack camel racer, very popular in the Gulf regions, and therefore very lucrative.

But Téhu’s speed quickly gives ideas to the odious Tarek, a dishonest man who intends to exploit this “goose that lays the golden egg” handsomely. Soon he succeeded in seizing Tehu. But Zodi manages to find his alter-ego, and begins a long journey with him, strewn with pitfalls. His goal: to reach Abu Dhabi, where the famous events take place that could make Tehu a superstar in his discipline.

Review by MAFAMILLEZEN

Young spectators should not be disappointed by Zodi and Tehu, brothers of the desert. Because there is at the heart of this feature film a moving story of complicity and tenderness between two solitary beings who have found each other: Zodi, whose great intelligence and preoccupations cut him off somewhat from the boys of his age, and the orphan dromedary Téhu, who has never learned to live in a herd with his congeners.

Rhythmic, not to say disheveled and punctuated by a certain number of twists and turnsZodi’s quest to allow Téhu to become the king of the racetracks, should also charm the children.

For more than an hour and a half, we also take full eyes with a whole host of landscapes, each more striking than the next. And the performers of Zodi and Tehu do not distract either: the small Yassir Drief, very naturalproudly holds the whole film on his shoulders, and Alexandra Lamy surprisesbeing more restrained than usual.

But can’t say why we don’t fully buy into this plot. Perhaps because on the theme of the friendship between the child and the animal, many films have already been imagined and this one, quite conventional, does not bring anything new in this vein and neither of spice. To fully convince us, their story would have had to be treated with more rough edges!
