Pain relief with Quell and OptiTherapy
Quell is a smart health smart health connected object from the company NeuroMetrix Inc and which offers to relieve us of our chronic pain thanks to OptiTherapy.
Quell is therefore a wearable smart health smart health connected object that attaches to your calf in order to cause chronic pain within 15 minutes of its application. To do this, he uses OptiTherapy technology which relies on electrodes which non-invasively stimulate the nerves. It can be used by everyone without a medical prescription. NeuroMetrix claims that Quell is able to relieve different types of chronic pain, from nerve pain to reducing back problems.
The promise is really enticing! So let's take a closer look at how it works. Via stimulation of the sensory nerves in your calf, nerve impulses are sent to the brain triggering the body's emergency response to physical pain in the form of endogenous opioids. These opioids then send signals to the opioid delta receptor which triggers this pain and therefore reduces the pain you feel.
A lot of questions still arise … In France, will this product have to be validated by a regulatory authority? Is it a medical device? Is over-stimulating the brain dangerous? In the United States, however, it has received FDA approval.
On a single charge, Quell is capable of operating up to 40 hours. It connects with an iOS device in order to follow the treatment but also to monitoring the quality of sleep. It will be available later this spring for $ 250 – and it has gotten FDA approval already, something that is always a good sign for any medical gadget.
