Pepper invites himself in European hospitals

Two Belgian health centers are embarking on the use of the receptionist robot Pepper, which guides visitors to the hospital, interacting with them in twenty different languages.

A new era is coming! The one where doctors, nurses and robots work hand in hand for the well-being of patients. After the inauguration of domestic androids in Humber River Canadian Hospital fully robotized a year ago, Belgium is the first European country to embark on this process, starting with two hospitals in the country.

Pepper accompanies visitors as clients

In concrete terms, the Pepper robot is already used in Japan as an assistant in the administrations and hospitals, providing advice to patients and visitors, guiding them in rooms at full speed (4 km / h).

If you are not familiar with Pepper, it is a humanoid robot that is one of the first to interact directly with people. From the height of his forty meter, the robot looks somewhat feminine has the ability to understand up to twenty different languages. He / she can nevertheless adopt the voice of a man, a woman or a child, to adapt to his interlocutor.

More and more countries are adopting these small independent nurses, but this is a first in Europe. In Spain, some medical centers use Automatic Guided Vehicles, or logistics robots, who travel alone in search of a person in need, to bring drugs or other health products.

Nevertheless, the fact that Pepper is visiting hospitals could be seen by some as a form of robotic invasion. Professionals agree that under no circumstances is this system will reduce staff and health personnel medical centers. As Barb Collins, Chief Operating Officer of Humber River Hospital, explained:

Instead of taking advantage of technological advances to reduce workstations, the hospital has increased its workforce to more than 700 employees.

After investing in sales in Japan, Pepper turns to personal service and helping people in need, a role in which the Aldebaran Robotics robot seems to shine.
