Personalize Alexa – Here's how

Alexa can already operate thousands of devices and thus acts more and more individually
What do washing machine, television, heating and robotic lawnmower have in common? They belong to the device classes for which more and more manufacturers are developing their own Alexa skills. If these are activated in the Amazon Skills Store or by voice command, manual operation can be easily replaced by voice control. In the beginning, very complicated formulations were necessary, but today everyone can determine how the individual components in the smart health home should react to Alexa commands. We give tips so that the language assistant reliably obeys the word.
Alexa optimization tip 1: change the activation word
Instead of shouting "Alexa!", Owners of an Amazon Echo speaker can also determine an alternative via the app. That has z. B. the advantage that friends or guest children do not allow themselves any fun and can secretly set alarm clocks or shop online.
To change the activation word, simply do the following:
Open the Alexa app and tap the icon with the three horizontal lines in the top left.
Click on the heading 'Settings' and select the desired speaker.
Make a choice between Alexa, Amazon, Echo or computer under 'Activation word'.
Note: Unfortunately, it is not yet possible to define your own name.
Alexa optimization tip 2: create voice profile
If several people live in a household, everyone can “educate” their Alexa-capable loudspeaker so that they can recognize their own voice. To do this, it is enough to ask the AI: "Alexa, learn my voice." Alexa can then play individual music playlists or prevent messages that have already been retrieved from being shared with the same person. In addition, voice-controlled purchases can be carried out more securely because the code defined by the device owner does not have to be re-entered every time.
Of course, other people can still talk to the Echo, but then they will not receive any individual information from Alexa.
More tips can be found in our voice recognition instructions, which also explain how individual profiles can be deleted.
Alexa optimization tip 3: create routines
Some like to start the day relaxed with soft meditation music while brewing tea, the other prefers to sleep until the last minute and only drinks a coffee quickly while listening to the news. These are just two examples where a personalized Alexa routine can be used. The following ehealth shows what this looks like in practice:
In addition, Alexa routines can of course also be used at any other time of the day and night. B. robotic lawnmower and garden lighting together. In addition, when leaving the house, all Alexa-compatible radio-controlled sockets can be switched off with a voice command in order to save energy and electricity costs.
Also practical: Answers to certain questions can be given via routines. And this is how it works:
Click on the settings in the Alexa app in the top left and select the 'Routines' tab.
Tap the plus sign in the top right corner.
Via "If the following happens", select "Voice" and enter an Alexa voice command
