The Sony World Photography Awards 2020 announced the winners of each of the categories in their Open competition. We invite you for this weekend inspiration to discover, and contemplate, the rewarded photos.
On April 15, Sony unveiled the first batch of laureates of the World Photography Awards 2020. We thus know the 10 photographers who won each category of the Open competition. This competition, open to amateurs and professionals, is divided into 10 categories: architecture, culture, creative, movement, landscape, nature and wild life, portrait, travel, street photography and still life.

Each winner receives photo equipment from Sony and is in the running to win the title of photographer of the year in the Open competition, all categories combined, with a reward of $ 5,000. The winner of the "supreme" title will be announced on June 9. Some pictures remind us that it is not necessarily necessary to have the most expensive camera, or the most recent, on the market to take beautiful photos.
Architecture Category
A black and white photograph representing 38 ° Parallelo, a pyramid sculpture by Mauro Staccioli installed at the precise location where the geographic coordinates touch the 38th parallel.
Culture Category
A snapshot of when the audience was invited to dance on stage during an Iggy Pop concert at the Sydney Opera House on April 17, 2019. The picture shows Iggy Pop in the midst of a crowd of fans in delirium: the singer is in the limelight when a woman manages to touch him and an assistant tries to keep the dancers at bay. The scene, compared with a painting by Caravaggio, evokes a biblical passage: "Because she said: If I touch, if only her clothes, I will be saved." (Mark 5: 25-34)
Creative Category
The portrait of a young woman with a collage of elements of symbolic significance. This black and white is part of the Hua series ("flower", in Chinese) presenting flowers as metaphors for femininity.
Movement Category
A souvenir from the demolition of the four cooling towers of the Ironbridge power station in Shropshire on December 6, 2019.
Landscape Category
The image of a lonely iceberg leaning against the walls of a fjord in a national park in northeast Greenland. The iceberg and the surrounding landscape are perfectly reflected in the crystal clear waters of the river and offer the spectacle of a pictorial and abstract photograph.
Nature and wildlife category
Taken in Botswana, the photo shows two cheetahs licking each other after a successful hunt: their positions in the frame draw a shape similar to the symbol of yin and yang.
Portrait Category
A black and white portrait of Pixies leader Charles Thompson (aka Black Francis), originally produced for Mojo Magazine. Experienced portrait photographer, Tom Oldham did not know how to approach his mission as his subject had had photo sessions since the start of his career. The portrait painter therefore asked him to express his frustration, his hands plunged into his face. The result was so successful that the photograph was placed at the top of the article.
Travel Category
An image taken from the top of the last wagon of a train transporting iron ore in Mauritania as it made its 700 km journey; from the coastal city of Nouadhibou to the region of Zouérat in the Sahara. The 2.5 km long train is one of the largest in the world with over 200 cars loaded with ore.
Street Photography Category
A protester in the city of Medellín where workers and street vendors were participating in a demonstration when the Medellin riot brigade dispersed them. It is one of the many protests that have erupted across Latin America in recent years due to rising costs of living, inequality and a lack of equal opportunity.
