Radbot – An intelligent thermostat for hydronic heating
Radbot is a smart thermostat a bit different from smart thermostats from Nest or Netatmo.
Radbot has been specially designed for hydronic heating systems; a very good idea in my opinion. This product was created by the inventor Damon Hart-Davis.
It is a smart thermostatic valve for hydronic systems (hot water radiators) used in homes. Unlike conventional thermostatic valves, the Radbot not only reacts to temperature, but also to variations in light.
According to its inventor, energy savings could reach 30%. It might sound high, but these figures are based on tests in real conditions. According to Damon Hart-Davis, Radbot learns through "probalistic predictive artificial intelligence".
If Radbot thinks you are present, you will get the maximum target temperature. If Radbot thinks you could be, or will be soon, there will be a small temperature drop of 1 ° C or 2 ° C to save energy. Radbot will also start up an hour before your arrival to maximize your comfort. It also calculates and stores a slippery notion of seven days of occupation in one hour increments.
For optimal operation, it is advisable to have a Radbot on each radiator in each room. Your comfort and your savings will only be optimized. With this system you will no longer have to worry about turning your radiators on or off.
By the way, the less your house is insulated, the more the smart thermostat will work well and will be justified. Which is logical since in a super-insulated house, the temperature is supposed to vary less.

In short, in a perfect world, all old buildings would benefit from should benefit from an intelligent thermostat; and would also be fitted with new windows and better insulation. But we are not in a perfect world. Smart thermostats like the Radbot don't replace insulation, but could make a real difference.
