Realme 5 Pro: the complete Review

[ad_1]

At Realme – which belongs to the same group as Oppo, Vivo and OnePlus – the strategy is clear: allow as many people as possible to acquire a good smartphone without spending too much. For this, the manufacturer uses an aggressive commercial technique with smartphones at low prices, and which benefit from a certain technical background. The Realme 5 Pro, which interests us here, for example, embeds a Snapdragon 712 SoC, a mid-range chip which should ensure good performance, a quadruple photo module at the back, or even VOOC 3.0 fast charging. But Realme has to face fierce competition, and above all has to make a name for itself on the French market. Let's see if the 5 Pro can help.

Careful design

With a price positioning of 199 euros, the Realme 5 Pro is part of the entry-level catalog of Android smartphones. However, the manufacturer does not skimp on the aesthetics and offers his mobile the same arguments as most of the mobiles tested at the end of last year. The 5 Pro benefits in particular from a screen with fine borders and a notch in water drop format, but also from a glass effect back (but in plastic) where some geometric figures and the mention of the brand are drawn. This shell is also slightly curved on the sides, improving the grip of the product, like almost all smartphones released in recent months.

A fairly prominent four-lens photo module is arranged vertically, while an efficient fingerprint reader sits in the center of the shell. You have to look at some details to really see the differences between the Realme 5 Pro and the Realme 5, tested some time before him. In addition to the slightly smaller screen in this Pro version (6.3 ”versus 6.5”), the USB port is a good idea for being Type-C rather than just a microUSB. The weight of the smartphone is also less important with 188 grams on the scale against 202 grams for the Realme 5. But this is to be put at the expense of a lower capacity battery (4035 mAh against 5000 mAh). As for the dimensions of the product, they are 157 x 74.2 x 9.2 mm while the Realme 5 has dimensions of 164.4 x 75.5 x 9.4 mm.

Good news for those who still appreciate wired headsets and earphones: the Realme 5 Pro has a 3.5 mm jack input. The loudspeaker is of average quality but will allow occasional viewing of videos without any real sound problem. Overall, the grip of this device is very correct, but plan to clean it regularly since fingerprints will be omnipresent.

A classic screen, but very convincing

The Realme 5 Pro therefore has a 6.3-inch LCD screen. Its definition is 2340 x 1080 pixels, which gives it a very favorable resolution of 409 ppi. In addition to that, the brightness is quite correct with 507 cd / m2 measured, which allows a possible consultation outside provided that there is not too much sun. As for the contrast, it is quite simply impressive for an LCD panel since we measured a rate of 1844: 1.

What about color fidelity? The default display of the cell phone looks pretty good, and it is possible to adjust the colorimetry of the Realme Pro 5 from the display settings (towards cooler or warmer). This impression is corroborated by our tests, which reveal a delta E by default of 4.42. This is obviously not the best on the market, but it is perfectly fine.

Convincing performance

Since the past year, it has to be said that all (or almost) all mobiles are efficient enough to satisfy our daily use. The difference is made on the level of requirement, and that is why manufacturers regularly distinguish their models dedicated to gaming from those designed for more common uses. And at Realme, the 5 Pro model has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 712 chip that performs better than that of the Realme 5 (Qualcomm Snapdragon 665). We tested here the 5 Pro in 4 GB of RAM, but it also exists in 8 GB for 249 euros.

In use, the 5 Pro is quite good, even on greedy games (PUBG, Call of Duty …) where there is no real heat, nor a drop in performance in the long term. This impression is further confirmed by the various benchmarks performed on mobile. Without being a thunderbolt, the Realme 5 Pro is an excellent smartphone in terms of performance, especially with regard to its pricing positioning. Those looking for an even more powerful mobile will be able to turn to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, a benchmark of its kind in the mid-range, but offered from 249.90 euros

In terms of interface, if the navigation is very fluid and pleasant, the ColorOS environment used by the brand sometimes leaves us a little perplexed with unusual pictograms (like the one allowing access to the parameters) and which we will have to used. In any case, we did not raise the problem of intrusive advertisements like on Realme 5. It is already that.

Pleasant daytime shots

When a manufacturer offers a smartphone for less than 200 euros, our expectations fall intrinsically in the field of photography. However, 2019 will have overcome some of these prejudices, and Realme 5 Pro with it. The smartphone incorporates four sensors: a main one of 48 megapixels (f / 1.8), one dedicated to the ultra wide angle of 8 megapixels (f / 2.25), one for portrait mode of 2 megapixels, and a last one of 2 megapixels for Macro mode (focus at 4 cm).

The main sensor is frankly effective during the day, with good color management and good dynamics. Unless you have the sun in front of you, most shots are fine with us. At night, this main unit continues to convince on the whole, even if the textures are rapidly deteriorated and a few defects appear. However, the color management remains adequate and the scenes are detailed enough not to curse the terminal as soon as night falls. If necessary, the Night mode allows you to restore a little consistency to the images, and the Ultra 48 MP mode will find its interest in daytime landscapes by offering more details. On the other hand, it is necessary to avoid moving subjects.

The ultra wide angle is effective in good light conditions, although it does not escape a gross loss of detail at the edges of the image. But it is more than enough for consultation on a smartphone. At night, this lens encounters the same problems as most of its competitors with a clear lack of details and very runny textures. Note that this mode is accessible from a pictogram (not very intuitive) at the top of the photo application, and is not offered in the zoom options. As we pointed out on the Realme 5 Review, some users may not even notice that the mobile has an ultra wide angle lens.

As it is becoming fashionable today, the Realme 5 Pro offers a Macro module on its mobile. It allows you to shoot just a few centimeters from an object, which at first glance could delight lovers of local flora. But the quality of the pictures is very low and this mode is therefore anecdotal. Finally, portrait mode is quite effective, although it can sometimes be necessary to do it several times to get the expected shot. But it is difficult to expect as much as on smartphones offered at more than 500 euros.

tA slightly worse autonomy than Realme 5

In terms of autonomy, the Realme 5 Pro is in the high middle, especially for an entry-level smartphone. In intensive use (several hours of ehealth games), the good endurance of the phone is clearly felt, and our measurements confirm these good impressions. The terminal has a versatile autonomy of 2:38 p.m., a ehealth streaming autonomy of 12h and a call autonomy of 24:09. Much to exceed the day of use, even if the results obtained are less impressive than those of Realme 5, which stands out as a cador in this area. However, the mobile offers fast charging with a duration of only 1h22 to increase the battery from 0 to 100%. For comparison, a Xiaomi Redmi Note 8T also equipped with a 4000 mAh battery needs 2h04 to achieve the same result.
