Reon Pocket – Sony launches its crowdfunding portable air conditioner

Sony has just unveiled the Reon Pocket air conditioner in crowdfunding through its own First Flight program. The Reon Pocket cannot work like magic and keep you all day in a perfectly cooled or heated bubble.

The Reon Pocket slips into a t-shirt

Designed to fit into the back of a specially designed t-shirt, it can lower your personal temperature by 13 ° C; or increase it by just over 8 ° C. The Reon Pocket portable air conditioner uses the Peltier effect. Electric current can be used to heat or cool something when combined with specific materials. Currently, temperature control is managed through a mobile app. But Sony plans to add automatic mode to its wearable in the future.

According to information on the Reon Pocket, it has already been extensively tested. It is designed to prevent back burns, provided you use the custom t-shirt provided. Based on testimonials from people who have tried it, everything seems to be working fine.

Be careful, however, not to wash it with the t-shirt because it is not waterproof. A single unit can also be smart health connected by smartphone; in case you are thinking of attaching a dozen to your body in the summer.

The autonomy is a bit weak

One of the issues could be the battery life. Apparently, the Reon Pocket can only be used for two hours between two recharges (via USB-C). This will not be enough to keep you cool or warm all day; but could allow you to go to the office in better conditions.

And bad news if you want to buy one, because it seems to be exclusively for Japan; for the time being. The project has now reached its crowdfunding goal, but the device should not be marketed before March 2020; and only in Japan.

At least the price is relatively affordable, at ¥ 12,760 (around $ 117). If an international edition ever appeared, it might be inexpensive enough to attract as many people as possible.
