Present at the IFA international trade fair, Runtastic revealed to visitors its smartwatch, Runtastic Moment. At first glance, the watch looks like traditional models, but make no mistake, it is indeed smart health connected. Discover our detailed Review.

The Runtastic Moment Elite is offered in a black and white box with front, invisible plastic protection allowing to see the watch, the name of the brand and the model chosen. On the sides we find without surprise the brand of Runtastic, and on the back all the features offered by the Moment Elite and two important notifications that hold attention: the waterproof icon and another indicating the absence of charger in the box. The back side is magnetized and can be pulled out, revealing the features translated into other languages.

Once the package is opened, there is of course the watch, accompanied by its user manual as well as a small screwdriver to keep preciously since it will be used to remove the four screws from the back of the watch to replace the battery when it is on the ball joints.

Runtastic Moment: Design & Ergonomics

One thing you notice immediately with the Runtastic Moment Elite is its design away from touchscreens presented by other giants. The watch is similar in all respects to the traditional watches which until now decorated the wrists. Only indication on the somewhat special nature of the device, the third needle, at the bottom of the scratch-resistant mineral glass dial.

Another small specificity of the dial, the fact that the minutes border it, displayed in white, surrounding the hours, smaller in red. A somewhat special choice, which will please or not it will depend on everyone's tastes, whatever it is, reading the time remains possible without any discomfort, no complaints on this point. The housing is made of stainless steel (ø 46 mm / 1.81 inches).

The watch will allow athletes to follow the evolution of their physical activity, for example the number of steps taken, depending on the goals they set for themselves. Different types of bracelets are available depending on the model chosen, the “Fun” version, for example, is available in silicone. The Moment Elite version is delivered with a black strap covered with fabric on the top and robust leather and comfortable to wear underneath, which makes it simple and sober, thus making it possible not to limit its use to sports sessions lest the watch be too showy, and detonate with its outfit.

Runtastic Me app

The Runtastic Me application will be in charge of storing all the data collected by the watch and formatting it so that the user can know all the details of his daily activity, apart from the heart rate. Runtastic Me is downloaded from Google Play or the Apple Store. Once installed, it will be possible either to connect via your Facebook account, or to create an account, where you will need, as with activity trackers, enter your gender, height, weight and of course your age.

By creating an account, an email will be sent to the email address provided to confirm registration and then give access to your account online. This brings together all the training carried out and allows to inform his friends on his mood, put together a workout program to follow, and monitoring your weight curve.

Using the Runtastic Moment Elite

As soon as the application is launched, the smartphone will search for the watch via Bluetooth during the operation, it is requested to maintain pressed the button at the bottom right of the dial. Once the two are smart health connected together, the Runtastic Moment Elite will automatically set the time, so there is no need to try to do it manually. The watch itself not really going to be interactive with its owner, not like other models with touch screens, for example.

Like an activity tracker, it will count the number of steps not performed, distance traveled, number of calories burned and serve as a sleep tracker. To view the data, you will need to log into the Runtastic Me app.

Theindicator at the bottom of the dial, informs the owner of the watch about progress that he did during the day to get closer to the goal he set for himself, to be set in the application settings. At the beginning of the day, the small needle starts at zero and will gradually move to 50, when half the goal is achieved and finally 100 when it is reached, triggering a small red LED, accompanied by vibrations. To activate the sleep tracker, pressing the button at the bottom for a few seconds will be enough to switch to night mode.

The watch is waterproof up to 90 meters and has a six month battery life. Among its advantages, being able to change it like a shirt without losing the information collected by the device previously worn and having to start all over again, the application will take care of synchronizing the data.

“Runtastic Me” stays the same, and is linked to all of the brand's applications. As can be seen above, the statistics are displayed in sequence according to the physical activity of the day. Having a connection with other Runtastic applications will allow the user to have in particular access to fitness and nutrition advice.

Facing the competition: Runtastic Moment VERSUS Pop activity of Withings

Runtastic is not the only brand to bet on a traditional smart-looking watch. The Withings Pop Activity also focuses on this point. Like its competitor, it has a dial indicating the daily progress of its owner. Unlike the Runtastic, it has small steps that will allow you to know very precisely its degree of progression.

Design level is Runtastic which takes it with very good quality material, which also explains its higher price, € 199 against € 150 for the smart health connected watch from Withings which is still quite suitable. The leather bracelet will marry in doubt better with the outfits and will therefore allow you to wear the watch with everything and anything. Thicker than the Pop Activity, it may appeal more to these gentlemen.

Like the Runtastic, the Pop Activity will count the number of steps, the distance traveled, calories burned and sleep. It will even be able to serve as a tracker for swimming enthusiasts. So there’s not really a winner, everything will depend on the budget available to consumers.

Runtastic Moment: Price and availability

Runtastic Moment, encompasses four collections of watches. The model Fun is available in 4 colors for 130 euros, the Basic model, which costs the same price, has a larger screen than the first smartwatch, and can be chosen in two colors: beige or black. The watch Elite is sold at a price of 200 euros, and finally users interested in the Classic will also have to pay 200 euros. They can choose between silver, pink, or gold finish with a leather strap.
