In the smart health connected watch landscape, there is the Apple Watch that continues to dominate the market and there are others. Samsung and Huawei are trying to come up with their own solution, while some trust Google's Wear OS. Among the latter, we find the smartwatches of the brand Fossil. For its fifth generation baptized Julianna HR, the manufacturer hopes to erase the flaws of the previous to make a place for itself among the watches Android.

Technical sheet

This Review was performed with a watch loaned by Fossil.

Elegant but imposing

The Fossil Julianna HR looks like a classic watch. It does not lack elegance with its copper dial and black strap made of fine mesh. The latter shows strength, flexibility, comfort and discretion. It is also easily adjustable, which suits small wrists like mine. Even if the case is lighter than the previous models, it is still 44 mm diagonal, which is noticeable. On thin arms, hard to forget. At the end of the day, you feel discomfort. But I do not doubt that for other bodybuilding, this is not a problem.

The watch has three buttons on the right edge of the case. The one at the center, more imposing, can open the installed applications or return to the main screen. Add that it also acts as a wheel to navigate menus, view notifications or quick settings. The sensation is rather pleasant. The top key takes us to the categories to customize while the bottom one rolls out the various sports activities available. Finally, the watch hosts a speaker grille on the left side. This is a new feature that allows you to interact with Google Assistant. Small problem, despite the activation of recognition "Ok Google", impossible to launch by voice command assistant.

An AMOLED slab

Fossil chose to integrate an AMOLED circular slab. An excellent point, which saves a little battery since the black pixels go out. The contrast ratio is obviously infinite and the maximum brightness is sufficient to maintain good readability even outdoors under the sun.

Automatic brightness reacts very well and adapts to all situations. You will not be dazzled at night either.

features

The Julianna HR has all the features we expect from a smart health connected watch in 2019. Although it will never replace a real heart rate monitor, heart rate measurement is consistent. The smartwatch can also count on a microphone, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections as well as the NFC for contactless payment for example. A GPS chip has also been integrated which allows to exercise physical activities without cluttering his smartphone.

The device also allows you to control your music directly from the dial. Too bad that the watch does not integrate the music players itself which proved useful for the sports sessions. Since we talk about sports, the Julianna HR works with Google Fit and collects a lot of information about your exercises.

To see as much as possible, you have to go to the mobile application. Finally, the list of different sports activities is long, you should find your happiness.

There is of course no surprise on the software side, it still seems so incomplete. If you find your notifications and some sports activities, all applications are not compatible and sleep tracking is still missing.

Snapdragon 3100 and Wear OS

Just like the Fossil Sport released earlier this year, the Julianna HR benefits from the latest SoC for Qualcomm's watches namely the Snapdragon 3100. The interest with the arrival of this brand new architecture is finally guarantee a decent autonomy. This is what was missing so far in Android watches. As for the previous model, it's a disappointment. Let's talk first about Power and Wear OS. The navigation lacks a little fluidity and we observe slowdowns when opening applications and features. We even encountered errors when launching Google Fit and the Play Store. Unable to access it, I had to turn off and on the watch so that it can finally answer my request. Chatting with Google Assistant is frustrating because of its slowness.

Autonomy

The Julianna HR Fossil unfortunately does not keep its promises. Its autonomy does not exceed a day. Arrived in the early evening, it is imperative to reload. Problems with the battery of Android-smart health connected watches persist despite what has been announced.

For charging, it has a small magnetic housing smart health connected to a USB cable A. The recharge time is rather fast, count about an hour.

Price and Availability

The Fossil smartwatch has a price of 299 euros. There are different bracelets: the one in fine mesh that we had for the Review, another silicone and finally, a steel.

The Fossil Julianna HR has several advantages. Its elegance, its AMOLED screen, many features … but unfortunately, it faces problems that we can not ignore. Wear OS seems poorly optimized since navigation lacks fluidity. Added to this are some regrettable bugs and strawberry autonomy. However, the arrival of the Snapdragon 3100 promised to correct that. Too bad, it is not yet for this time that Android watches will become indispensable.

  • A beautiful AMOLED screen

  • Elegant design

  • Full features

  • Lack of fluidity

  • Autonomy far too feeble
