[Review] OCIGO, the smart health connected ethylotest that reconciles us with sobriety

Drink or drive, you must choose. And that's good, the smart health connected oxygenator OCIGO is there to prevent you from getting behind the wheel after a night a little too watered. A French creation that we had the opportunity to Review this weekend.

Design and start-up 

In terms of its design, the OCIGO breathalyser is a small flute with a removable tip. An LCD screen five centimeters long, and a single central button are present for ignition and measurement. The object is presented in a housing with three end caps and a charging cable via micro-USB. Once loaded, it can be used independently, or smart health connected in Bluetooth to a smartphone via the dedicated application, freely available on iOS and Android. The display indicates the procedure to be followed, and once the preheating phase has passed, simply blow continuously into the tip of the device for five seconds for the rate to appear.

Imagined by the start-up OlytheOriginating in Aix-en-Provence, the OCIGO ethylotest works according to the principle of infrared spectroscopic detection. Specifically, the device emits infrared waves at the time of the Review, which are then absorbed by the alcohol molecules. Measuring the remaining waves after this absorption then makes it possible to precisely evaluate the level of alcohol present in the exhaled air. The technology would be as reliable as a blood Review, and already has the EN 16280 certification. OCIGO is not available for sale to individuals. Reserved for companies, the smart health connected breathalyser is sold for € 250, but Olythe plans to develop similar (and probably cheaper) products for the general public in the future. The opening of an online store is also planned soon.

Driven by the love of investigation and hard work, we had to sit down (or at least behind the bar) to Review the object in real conditions. Once the alcohol meter is turned on and synchronized with the phone, a first blank Review is required. It blows five seconds, and the measurement is displayed on the phone. 0g before the aperitif, everything seems normal, serious things can begin. After a few drinks, the blood alcohol level goes up as fast as the atmosphere of the evening, and it must be admitted that the figures are surprisingly fast.

After a few beers, one or two glasses of champagne, and a good digestive, the threshold of 0.4 mg / L of expired air is quickly reached. Not enough to roll under the table, but enough to be banned from flying. As a reminder, the legal threshold is 0.25 mg / L of exhaled air. In addition to alerting us to the danger, the breathalyzer also plays the pedagogues, offering an explanatory graphic, andno time limit to sufficiently lower the blood alcohol level, depending on whether one has planned or not to eat in the meantime. The tool is rather effective even if it suffered from some display bugs. At times, it may not be possible to have a consistent cut-off time, so it may be difficult for the unit to set the cut-off time when the delay runs over two days. If it is not smart health connected to any device, the rate is displayed directly on the LCD screen on the OCIGO.

While being quite educational, the OCIGO breathalyzer also had the good idea not to gamify the consumption of alcohol. Above 0.40 mg / L of exhaled air, the threshold is blocked, and simply indicates that the user is in danger if he gets behind the wheel. A precaution that will prevent users to be tempted to Review the limits of the object (which was obviously not our case), and so we seem pretty well.
