Rocks or junk? 30 euro smartwatch with SIM & amp; camera

Today's episode of “Rockt or Ramsch?” Is about a very affordable smartwatch with a SIM card slot and camera that can also be paired with Android smartphones.

For just under 30 euros, the smartwatch christened X6 is a wearable that can be used with or without an Android smartphone. In addition to a SIM card slot, the smart health watch, which visually resembles the Apple Watch, has also installed a camera. You can find out in our ehealth how the cheap smartwatch performs in practice.

The Smartwatch X6, which we take a closer look at in today's episode of "Rockt or Ramsch", costs just under 30 euros, at Chinashop Everbuying.net. The equipment, on the other hand, seems to be pretty neat – at least on paper. The wearable, for example, has a SIM card slot and can therefore work autonomously without a smart health connected smartphone, i.e. also receive and send phone calls and SMS – and thus replace the mobile phone to a certain extent. The internal memory of the smartwatch is 64 MB, there is a microSD card slot to expand the memory. The Mediatek processor working inside is supported by 128 MB of RAM. With the 400 mAh battery, the good piece lasts just under two days, although the display turns off when you are not using it. The resolution of the 1.54 inch screen is 240 × 240 pixels.

As can not be overlooked, the manufacturer was inspired by the design of the Apple smartwatch: the part looks one to one like the simple watch from Cupertino – including a replica of the digital crown. However, the X6 has no function, or the 0.3 megapixel resolution camera sits behind it. The position of the buttons turned out to be quite unfavorable in the Review because uncomfortable dislocations are necessary so that the back of the hand does not become part of the photographed image. The quality of the photos and videos taken is quite poor.

The smartwatch is switched on via the hardware button on the right. The number of watch faces is somewhat limited to just three. Swiping the dial to the side takes you to the main screen, where you have direct access to your saved contacts and the telephony app. By wiping the screen horizontally or vertically again, you can access the app drawer. Phoning with the smartwatch works well in principle, but occasionally there are noises that we couldn't find out exactly what triggers it.

There is an on-screen keyboard for replying to messages or writing SMS. In the QWERTZ layout, typing texts is rather fiddly, but can be done despite the small display. Writing on the smartwatch works a little better with a T9 mobile phone keyboard, provided you set the appropriate German layout. The only stupid thing is that the keyboard does not remember this and you have to manually select it each time before typing – and that's really annoying.

Thanks to the SIM card slot, the X6 smartwatch also has access to the Internet – at least this should actually be the case. There is even an internet browser and apps for Twitter, Facebook and WhatsApp. In the Review, we did not manage to get a working connection despite the APN being correctly stored in the settings. It was not possible to find out why. On another smartwatch that we are currently testing and that has the same operating system, access to the Internet works without any problems with the same settings.

The smartwatch installed a music player, which, however, could not find the MP3 files that we had stored on the memory card. On the other hand, they could be opened easily via the gadget's file browser, but there is no way to adjust the volume or skip to the next track in this way.

The peculiarity of the wearable is that it does its job even without a smart health connected smartphone, but it can also interact with Google phones using a special Android app. Incoming calls and notifications are then displayed on the smartwatch and calls and SMS can be sent from the wearable using a mobile phone. The notification function on the X6 turned out to be quite meaningless in the Review – for WhatsApp chats or e-mails arriving on the cell phone, for example, you are only informed that a message was received – and do not find out what it says. Apart from that, the connection was broken and the smartwatch had to be manually reconnected to the cell phone.

It should be clear that one shouldn't expect too much for 30 euros. However, the available features should at least begin to work. With the X6 smartwatch, this is simply not the case in some areas and poorly implemented in other areas. In this case, the conclusion is clear: the part is junk.
