Running once a week reduces the risk of death

As an individual or group sport, running is within the reach of almost everyone. New research by researchers in Australia, Thailand, Austria and Finland suggests that running once a week is good for your health and reduces the risk of death.

New international research has shown that no matter how duration and the cadence, running makes it possible to lower the risk of mortality of subjects who indulge in it even once a week. This meta-analysis, conducted by researchers from Australia, Thailand, Austria and Finland, reviewed 14 pre-existing health studies of 232,149 people followed between 5.5 and 35 years. The researchers analyzed the data to see if there was an association between racing and the risk of death from all causes, cardiovascular illnesses and of Cancer.

Running is beneficial, regardless of duration or pace

Their results, taken online by the British Journal of Sports Medicine, have shown that the running appeared to lower the risk of all-cause mortality in men and women by 27% compared to those who never ran.

In addition, any amount of stroke was associated with a 30% lower risk of cardiovascular illnesses and also reduced the risk of death from cancer by 23%. The smallest amount of running, evaluated in the study at less than 50 minutes per week at a rate of less than 8 km / h, was associated with a significant reduction in the risk of death from all causes.

Indeed, although the scientists did not succeed in establishing a minimum amount of stroke to reduce his risk of mortality, their study did not allow them to suggest that the increase in frequency, duration or cadence of race resulted in better results for extend its longevity. But since this meta-analysis is based on observation, the researchers emphasize that it cannot establish a cause and effect link. They also note that reviewing only 14 studies limits conclusions and that the methods of each study varied widely, which may have influenced the results.

They conclude, however, that running, regardless of duration or frequency, is better for your health than not running at all, and that this sport can improve the health and longevity of the population.

Running, even if only moderately, would reduce the risk of death from all causes and from cardiovascular disease. This is demonstrated by an epidemiological study of more than 55,000 adults.

To stay healthy, it is important to practice regular physical activity. But from how long have you been practicing sports and at what intensity can you expect to live longer? This is what American researchers have wondered in the case of running. Their results have just been published in Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

From study data Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study, the researchers followed 55,137 adults aged 18 to 100 over a 15-year period. The average age of the participants was 44 years. The objective was to identify a possible relationship between the practice of running and thelife expectancy. The participants thus filled out questionnaires on their physical activities. Assessment: 24% of them claimed to run as part of their leisure activities.

In the meantime, 3,413 people have died, including 1,217 due to cardiovascular disease. Compared to those who did not run at all, people who practiced running had a 30% reduced risk of death from all causes. For heart disease and AVC, the risk even decreased by 45%. In short, the runners lived on average 3 years longer than the others!

Profits by running 5 to 10 minutes a day

However, one can wonder if the risks of death decrease all the more as the practice of the race is intense. Researchers observed similar benefits for runners, regardless of distance, time, frequency, speed. A reduction in risk of death was observed in those who practiced less than 51 minutes, for about 10 km (6 miles), less than 10 km / h and this once or twice a week … It is always more beneficial than not running all !

Hard-core runners did not necessarily reap greater benefits from running more. In terms of mortality, those who ran less than an hour per week had the same benefits as those who did more than 3 hours per week. Running longer was therefore no guarantee of longevity. However, persevering in this sports practice had an effect: practicing for 6 years had more significant benefits with, for example, a 50% reduction in the risk of death for heart cause or AVC.

For Duck-chul Lee, lead author of the article, this should encourage people sedentary healthy to get into this sport: lack of time should not be a barrier, in fact, since running 5 to 10 minutes per day, at less than 10 km / h, would be enough to reduce the risk of death.
