Samsung brainBAND fights concussions

smart health connected objects and sport are good friends. Samsung understood this well and launched the brainBAND, a headband that installs on the foreheads of risky sports players to prevent the dangers of concussion. With this innovation, the Korean brand comes directly to compete with tools like the VICIS Zero1 helmet or the Reebok CheckLight hat.

The boxing, rugby and football fans will be happy to hear that the brainBAND was designed by neuroscientist Alan Pearce and designer Braden Wilson to measure the power of the impacts that they can receive at the head during their matches or training. Worn all around the head, it is equipped with several sensors at the back of the skull capable of quantifying the force of the collisions. These then ensure real-time transmission to an application dedicated (available on mobile, smartwatch and tablet), that can consult doctors, referees and coach to always check that the teams remain in top form.

As on the CheckLight already presented by the equipment manufacturer Reebok, theshock intensity is also indicated by LEDs on the wearable : yellow, orange and red will warn of severity of the situation. Thus, a decision could be precise as to whether it is necessary to remove the player for a thorough medical examination. All the recorded data through the device can be viewed anytime, thus allowing the athlete and his team toanalyze and of monitoring the impacts (number and intensity) received throughout their career.

Still in the state of prototype (10 concepts are under study), the banner is still very promising and has already been tested on a professional rugby team to better understand the brain lesions: it has a chance to be one day marketed by Samsung .
