Sanofi withdraws from Onduo, the joint venture co-built with Google on diabetes

Enlisted in September 2019, the new Executive Director of Sanofi, Paul Hudson, revealed his roadmap, December 10, 2019. The project of the leader, whose guidelines were taken by Mobihealthnews, wants to break with tradition: exit diabetes research. As a result, the tricolor laboratory is withdrawing from Onduo, the joint venture developed in 2016 with Verily Science LLC, subsidiary of Alphabet (parent company of Google).

The two companies had invested $ 500 million to create this virtual clinic specializing in the management of type 2 diabetes. The goal was to offer innovative treatments to patients to manage their disease by developing, among other things, smart health connected objects. The French laboratory relied on Google to build an integrated offering that combines medicines and smart health connected medical devices.

Sanofi would have "over-invested" in Onduo

Today, Paul Hudson believes that Sanofi has "surinvesti" in Onduo but the big pharm does not completely disengage. It will remain investor but will not be involved in the operational plan.

The new Director General believes that we need to be more selective in our activities and research. "In diabetes, the projects we had were not transforming or disruptive enough for payers and doctors", did he declare.
