A start-up wants to democratize a miniature molecular scanner, SCiO. Everyone could scan the food and find out the nutrient composition. Almost $ 2 million was raised on Kickstarter.

In terms of performance on Kickstarter, Scio slowly approaches the blockbuster, the Oculus Rift. Today, the Israeli start-up that originally wanted to raise $ 200,000 is left with almost $ 2 million raised, 19 days before the end of the campaign.

SCiO, a miniature molecular scanner

According to many experts, SCiO is on the verge of revolutionizing people's consumption habits, and the world of smart health connected health. Thanks to this “pocket” molecular scanner, Users will be able to discover the chemical composition of everything around them: from food to liquids, including medicines or plants. In other words, a user will be able to walk around a supermarket and scan the food (even via packaging) to discover its nutritional composition. SCiO would therefore provide a real solution for people suffering from food allergies such as gluten, nuts or milk. In terms of efficiency, it is therefore far above a SITU smart health connected food scale.

If the molecular scanner is not an innovation in itself (it already exists in its specialized laboratories), it is more the small size that impresses. The ambition of the start-up which is to make this product accessible to all is exceptional. SCiO is no bigger than a lighter, and its weight is only 20 grams. This miniature object will record the data of the scanned product, transfer it via its database and then display it on a Smartphone application (iOS and Android). The connection is made in Bluetooth Low Energy.

With the craze on Kickstarter, prices simply exploded: initially sold at $ 149 per unit, the various thresholds were crossed. If you want to buy one, you will have to spend $ 299 (add $ 15 for delivery outside the US) for delivery in february 2015.
