Seniors connect!
The revolution of smart health connected objects spares no one and especially not the category of seniors! Pill boxes, computer tools or even smart health connected wheelchairs, this is the case, in 2014, the elderly are smart health connected!
We start with pill ! Even when you are young, remembering that you have to take your medication is not always easy and if the older you get, the more you forget, you have not left the inn. Fortunately for the elderly (and heads up in the air), smart health connected pill dispensers have arrived on the market !
IMedipac, Do-pill secure or Med-secure, the choice is vast! At IMedipac, the boxes light up when it is time to take your medicine! And only the lit box can open! So no more forgetfulness and no more mistakes, you can now take your medication safely security !
And if the oversights persist (yes, it happens), the pill box is smart health connected and can alert your family and especially your doctor ! Safe do-pill, it's a bit the same principle, the sound signal moreover! And as far as Med-secure is concerned, it offers an alert service! Phone calls, messages or emails, this pill box warns those around you if you do something stupid with your treatments!
And if you have trouble getting around, there is the solution for a smart health connected chair! Because for the elderly or disabled, small daily actions can be a challenge, technology takes the gamble to make their lives easier!
The German Institute Fraunhofer and the medical technology manufacturer Otto bock join forces to equip a wheelchair with new functionalities. The principle is simple, just connect a mobile or a PC to the existing wheelchair control system. Wheelchair users can use this device as a wheelchair control, send emails, make phone calls and even send SOS when needed.
The system also allows to assess the state of the wheelchair battery, finding wheelchair accessible routes or finding suitable places, metro stations and public toilets.
The chair and its control system are not yet available. Tests are still underway and more features are expected. It could in the future allow people with disabilities to perform other daily tasks such as adjusting the air conditioning, blinds or lights.
Another tool now essential to our daily lives, the telephone portable ! For our seniors, Doro offers better than that, a smartphone ! In the program : all the functionalities of a smartphone with, in addition, certain subtleties, which allow a non-tech-savvy audience to use it ! Three real keys, a smart keyboard that adapts to the way you type or even larger icons, Doro invents the smartphone for everyone.
Doro’s operating system is Android 4.1 and it’s been changed once again to simplify the use of this smartphone. Only small flaw of the new smartphone, no front sensor so no ehealth (which would have been really practical with grandma!)
The Doro Liberto 810 is already available at a price of 180 euros without subscription. Also available, the orange Fujitsu Stylistic S01: design, waterproof, easy-to-use operating system and “emergency call” function, on the other hand here, we pay for simplicity at a high price: without subscription, the smartphone is offered at 399.90 euros. And for the elderly who need assistance, True-Kare. Geolocation, information on taking medication or even uploading health data (weight, blood pressure, heart rate, etc.), the True-Kare really takes care of you.
And to continue in the range of smart health connected tools, Doro launches its computer and its simplified touch pad intended for seniors!
As far as the computer is concerned, this is a Acer aspire 5, simplified. As with the smartphone, icons and text are larger. The screen is touchscreen so it's as everyone prefers, you can click on their program with their mouse or their finger! The keyboard is also changed and simpler. Finally, it is especially that the computer comes with a “keyboard”, which offers keys direct access to “copy and paste” functions, “zoom” and sound adjustment. Price: around 800 euros.
After the phone and the computer: the smart health connected touch pad for seniors! Ordissimo offers them a simplified tablet. No need for antivirus, she is vaccinated, and for those who have vision problems, just press the button Zoom. Ordimemo is a compromise between computer and tablet : both are available. And there again, the functions are suitable for people over 65. At specialist Doro, it can be found at 99 euros.
The health of seniors smart health connected! This is the bet that the Canadian company Y-Combinator has launched with the Amulyte pendant. Amulyte, it's a sensor to track the activity of the elderly. The principle is simple: in the event of an incident, they press the single button on the device, and it immediately notify family or doctor. Equipped with a GPS tracker (which works anywhere and anytime thanks to the telephone network or wifi), an accelerometer, a microphone and a week battery, it is one of the essential items for health home care.
Thanks to a smartphone application, it is possible to know, or is the carrier of Amylute, to know their level of physical activity and the battery level of their smart health connected pendant ! The alerts in the event of an incident can be chosen: by e-mail, by phone, by message or by notifications. Amylute is available for pre-order in the United States for 149 dollars (around 107 euros) + subscription of 29 dollars (20 euros).
If seniors evolve and pass 2.0, we wanted to know the opinions of retirement homes on smart health connected objects.
Regarding the Residence du Marais in Paris, a nursing health home on rue Barbette in the 3rd arrondissement, it does not use smart health connected objects.
"We don't impose smart health connected devices on seniors, for the most part they don't want to use them."
However, they do offer computer sessions for those who want and have made a computer available to them.
At the Douais hospital center, at the Residence Marceline Desbordes-Valmore precisely, we use certain smart health connected objects and particularly the solution E-lio from Technosens. Installed on the television, this program also allows to access traditional channels, to listen to the radio, to play, to listen to music, to be able to exchange with your loved ones by videoconference, to follow the programs of the retirement health home from your room and to call from unlimited way. “Residents feel less alone and closer to their families!”
In Montpellier, at Rosemary hearth, we use the “Wiithérapie". The principle: introduce residents to the Wii, explain how it works and let them have fun with it. And it works, after 18 months of use, the results are there:
We find that a group of ten residents are regular Wii users. Next to it, there are fifteen others who stay in the action, encourage, give answers or applaud the players. In a way, they play "by proxy". We find that some people, with significant memory loss, do not remember having ever played Wii when they have been doing it for several months. But it is surprising to see that their performance improves from week to week, which can be explained by learning procedural memory. There is even a moment when the click occurs at the level of the use of the joystick (in bowling for example) and this learning remains then.
The smart health connected seniors revolution is underway!
