London leads on the per capita scale with 3.69 cafes per 10,000 people. Tokyo and Shanghai follow closely with 2.85 cafes per 10,000 inhabitants.

There are over 7,000 cafes worldwide, but only 6,913 of them are independent shops. This excludes convenience stores and fast food restaurants. More than half of the cafes are independent shops, and more than half are owned by large coffee chains like Starbucks and Costa.

Huaihai Zhong Lu is the street with the most cafes in Shanghai. There are nearly 50 cafes along this main boulevard. Nanjing Xi Lu has 41 establishments and Wenhui Lu has 37. Walkers will find a café every 100 meters in the streets of Shanghai. Fengjing Lu has the highest density, with five cafes per 100m.

China’s coffee market has boomed in recent years

The data of Statistics show that the Chinese coffee market will experience an annual growth of 11.3%.

This is reflected in the rapid growth of fourth-wave cafes, which offer coffee cocktails, coffee and juice combinations, and environmentally and socially responsible coffee bean options.

The rise of coffee culture in Shanghai is a trend that will not fade. It is spreading to other parts of China and encouraging people of all ages to replace their tea cup with a coffee cup.

Gone are the days when the best baristas hailed from coffee-growing regions like Australia, Italy or Panama, and Nanjing-based Du Jianing proved they could still succeed by winning the World Cup brewers 2019.

She is the first Chinese barista to have won this international competition and she is helping to put China on the map.
