Smart lenses against glaucoma
Sensimed has received the green light from the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) for Triggerfish, its smart contact lenses aimed at fighting glaucoma, one of the common causes of blindness.
Triggerfish are developed for adults 22 years of age or older and are made with flexible silicone. Google’s smart lenses are no longer the only ones approaching production. Google has developed its own smart health connected contact lenses to help diabetics detect and monitoring blood glucose levels. Google signed a deal with drug maker Novartis in 2014 and plans to start human testing this year. Unlike the Triggerfish lens, Google has not yet received the green light from the FDA.
Sensimed smart lenses can be worn for 24 hours, which means you can sleep with them. When worn, Triggerfish can measure changes in intraocular pressure (IOP). The data is then transmitted wirelessly to a data logger and can then be sent via Bluetooth to your doctor's computer.
Triggerfish should help identify when the pressure rises and may cause damage to the optic nerve; one of the hallmarks of glaucoma. A decision can then be made quickly and avoid or in any case prevent further damage. At the moment, we do not know when the Sensimed smart lenses will be marketed.
