Smart pills are coming to the market!

One of the advantages of wearables is that they are non-invasive. However, this advantage is also one of their main shortcomings. That’s why the Ingestibles were invented.

Ingestibles have grown slowly in recent years. So where are we, and when will they be on the market?

Ingestible smart pills

As I said, the wearbles can only offer us a non-invasive look at what is going on in our body. So you still need to go to your doctor to get a blood Review or to take X-rays of your body.

What if you could put sensors in your body by simply swallowing a pill? Imagine the possibilities of sensors inside you that keep track of all your vital functions, letting you know when something is wrong.

No, Ingestibles are not smart foods that increase your protein or vitamin B levels or something like that. These are small pills that carry sensors that can connect to your computer or another device.

You must, of course, literally ingest them, as you would with your allergy or aspirin medications. Ingestibles is one of three health communication devices approved by the FCC. The other two are wearables and embeddables.

Most of the Ingestibles you will see today look like our good old pills. The reason is obvious: they are easy to swallow. So, is it possible that one day nanotechnology will invade our food?

Today, the first FDA-approved Smart Ingestible pill is to make sure you are actually taking the medication your doctor prescribed. Its name: Abilify MyCite. Once ingested, it sends a signal to a smart patch worn on the rib cage. The patch sends the ingestion information to your smartphone, and your doctors can view the information to make sure you have taken your medication.
