SmartPlate, the plate that warns you if you overeat

[ad_1]

After the smart health connected fork, make way for the smart plate. The SmartPlate, which is currently seeking funding on the KickStarter platform, offers a solution to a still important problem when it comes to combining dietetics and technology: the drudgery of quantifying and recording everything that we eat.

Numerous applications, in particular those proposed with self-measuring bracelets, make it possible to record the food consumed to have a daily estimate of its caloric consumption. But the task is generally tedious and imprecise, and users tend to quickly give up. The SmartPlate proposes to simplify the process, by weighing each food itself, and by directly indicating the caloric intake through a mobile application.

Three cameras to recognize food

The plate is divided into three spaces, each with a photo sensor. smart health connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to an Android or iOS smartphone, the SmartPlate uses food recognition technologies, coupled with weight sensors. The nutritional information is then delivered after having been drawn from different databases, grouping tens of thousands of foods.

If the user has used too generously and exceeds the recommended caloric limit – or that he has set himself beforehand – the plate is then able to alert him, by advising him to lighten his meal. The SmartPlate is presented as being useful for people wishing to lose weight, but not only: it can also help athletes, by combining with other tracking applications, for example.

Very advanced algorithms

The smart plate therefore wants to replace the tedious weighing and recording of food. But it still has to be really effective. According to its creator, this is already the case: product recognition algorithms can recognize " mixed salads, pilaf rice, spaghetti with their sauce and their meatballs " Explain the Kickstarter page of the project. " The plate can even make the difference between white pasta and whole wheat pasta with their sauce ". The technology is destined to be further refined.

The project, which is still at the prototype stage, has already received several awards in the United States, where obesity is a public health problem. The SmartPlate could become a reality in June 2016, provided that it manages to raise the sum of $ 100,000 through crowdfunding. In just a few days, just over $ 16,000 was raised, which is a good start. The campaign makes it possible to pre-order a smart health connected plate for 99 dollars, knowing that it will cost double when it arrives on the market. At this price, we hope that it is effectively effective.
