SmartSeries, the new smart health connected toothbrush from Oral-B

Last March, in Barcelona, took place the Mobile World Congress. It was on this occasion that Oral-B exhibited its famous “SmartSeries”: a smart health connected toothbrush capable of recording your oral performance, analyzing it in the form of graphs and providing you with personalized advice. In parallel, a mobile application, linked by Bluetooth 4.0, offers several brushing modes.

We are far from the simple stick decorated with a few hairs with which our parents were satisfied. For its first smart health connected toothbrush, Oral-B does not skimp on resources by offering new functionalities far from being incidental. Equipped with pressure sensors, this new device analyzes brushed areas and prevents deterioration of the gums. In addition, his “Tilt-and-turn technology” allows to eliminate “Up to 100% more plaque compared to a manual toothbrush”. Just that.

All that is very beautiful, but communication side, let's face it, there is more talkative than a toothbrush. That's why Oral-B equipped it with a Bluetooth 4.0 connection and accompanied by Android and iOS mobile app. The goal ? Especially present the inside of your mouth with a graphic composed of four quadrants, named Smart Guide, in order to present your teeth in several brushing zones. This program goes hand in hand with a timer which helps you to respect the statutory brushing time of two minutes, advised by dentists. Thus, every thirty seconds, your Oral-B will emit a signal alerting you to change zones in order tooptimize the best your oral hygiene.

That’s for basic brushing, but Oral-B is more than just a stopwatch. The mobile application offers you many other opportunities, such as the choice of your brushing mode. Because yes, several modes are available. The machine's operating manual presents six of them:

  • Cleanliness : this is the standard mode for daily cleaning.

  • Thorough cleaning : offers brushing over a longer period (45 seconds per quadrant, for a total of three minutes)

  • softness : for gentle and thorough cleaning of sensitive areas.

  • whitening : polishing for occasional or daily use.

  • Massage : a gentle simulation of the gums.

  • Tongue cleaning : optimally completes the cleaning of your mouth.

Each brushing mode is compatible with several brushes provided, each with its own specialty. Also, be aware that it is possible to customize a profile just for you, allowing you for example to start with a thorough brushing of three minutes, before going to a polishing and to relax thanks to a massage of the gums and a cleaning of the tongue. If you take no pleasure in brushing your teeth with it, then you are doing it on purpose.

And then he stays recording your brushing data. Do you find that a bit too grown? Think again, because the application has a real use … to dentists! This is the last notable point of these SmartSeries: by considering the way you brush your teeth as medical data, it is possible to record them via a dedicated interface to inform your doctor. By consulting it, he will be able to monitoring your daily dental hygiene and give you personalized advice on the areas to be brushed more, the time to be allocated to them, etc. As if that were not enough, the application also allows you to directly manage your appointments online.

If smart health connected toothbrushes are a topic you regularly follow, you should know that Oral-B is not the only toothbrush on the market. Nor the first, since this merit goes to French Kolibree, which we have already talked about here. So what to choose? Oral-B or Kolibree?

In fact, it is clear that the features offered by the two brands are very similar. Both offer a Bluetooth connection to your mobile which will display a timer and indicate the areas to be brushed more. The smart app will even give you hygiene advice whatever you choose and can deliver valuable information to your dentist. Where they differ, it is in the details.

First, Kolibree, with its systematic recording and archiving of the time and quality of brushing, offers a more followed version of the presentation of your performances. It is thus possible to check for yourself whether your attendance at brushing our teeth improves or deteriorates over time. If this feature is not useful at first, it is less useful when you consider it in the family setting. Because yes: Kolibree offers different profiles for each user toothbrush. The whole family can use the same program and thanks to these tracked recordings, it becomes easier for parents to monitoring the oral hygiene of their offspring. This social and family aspect is found in proposed mini-games and in the possibility of earning “badges” when the children are sufficiently assiduous in the task. The price, finally, is more democratic since the Kolibree can be bought between $ 99 and $ 200 depending on the model (which is equivalent to € 75 and € 150)

For its part, Oral-B focuses more on the quality and comfort of each brushing. Its ease of handling (the mobile application turns on automatically with the brush), its different brush heads and its multiple brushing modes clearly present it as a luxury item. Understand: far from being necessary in most families, but still much more pleasant to use than a standard toothbrush for those who can afford it. 220 and 280 euros : these will be the prices of the two models that Oral-B will put on the market in June 2014, respectively for the Triumph White 6000 and the Black 7000. At this price, many will prefer to keep their manual toothbrush. Your turn to judge.
