Smartwatches: Android Wear gets new functions

Google's wearable OS Android Wear will receive a major update with some new features in the next few weeks. Smart watches with integrated loudspeakers can also be used to make calls in the future, for example.

Google has announced a major update for its Android Wear smartwatch operating system in the official blog. It should find its way onto the corresponding smart watches within the next few weeks. The search engine giant promises a total of three major innovations – for example, new gestures for navigating within the user interface. In the future, it will also be possible to shake, bump and lift in this regard. In order to try out these possibilities, there will be a corresponding tutorial in the settings.

The second major innovation is the support of apps such as Telegram, Viber, WhatsApp and WeChat for sending messages by voice. In the future, for example, “Okay Google, send a WhatsApp message to Stefan: Fancy a beer?” Can conveniently make an appointment to visit the pub with a smartwatch without having to touch the gadget at all.

If you have an Android Wear watch with an integrated loudspeaker, such as the Huawei Watch or the Asus Zenwatch 2, you can also use it to make calls in the future. The just announced update brings with it appropriate support to be able to use the gadget as a Bluetooth hands-free device. In addition, audio / ehealth messages can be viewed and listened to after the update. Google names the program as an example of corresponding apps Glide.

The innovations just announced are to be rolled out within the next few weeks – Google does not specify a specific time frame.
