Sonos One the smart speaker
At first glance, the Sonos One looks a lot like its little brother, the Sonos Play: 1. A compact wireless speaker launched in 2013, a deliberate choice of the brand. It takes the lines of a 16 cm high cube with rounded corners, available in black or white.
The Sonos One an intelligence within earshot:
On the technical side, the Sonos One is a directional speaker with a front subwoofer and a tweeter concealed behind a wire mesh.
On top is the touch controls. There is a touch button to activate or deactivate the microphones, the volume up and down buttons and a pause-play button.
Swiping from left to right through the two volume buttons skips the track forward and backward by swiping the other direction. The whole is very responsive.
There is also an LED on the top to indicate if the microphone is on. And another LED to indicate that the speaker is on.
On the back is the power outlet and a button used to configure the speaker and an Ethernet port. The button on the back is used as part of the pairing process.
Use and services offered:
In terms of use, the Sonos One is relatively simple to use.
For this, we download the Sonos application on our smartphone or tablet. Then connect the speaker to the Wi-Fi or Ethernet network. And finally we configure the streaming and voice assistance services. The whole operation does not take more than 15 min, you will first need to create an account with Sonos.
On the positive side, the Sonos app is available for Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac OS.
For music services, don't worry about that. The Sonos One is compatible with no less than 49 different music services, very handy if like me you have more than one streaming account.
This of course includes the biggest names in the industry. Namely Spotify, Apple Music, Google Play Music, Amazon Music and TuneIn, and there is also the possibility of accessing local and international radio stations.
Another positive point is the voice assistant functionality. Just say "Alexa" and he'll listen to you The Sonos One integrates Amazon's Alexa assistant, but Sonos also promises compatibility with Google’s assistant for 2018.
Sonos One has no problem hearing you with its six microphones and background noise reduction technology. The speaker makes a little “bong” to let you know that it is starting to listen to you.
Conclusion:
The sound is excellent, a lot of choice of music service, compact, application compatible with Alexa and soon with Google. But there is no Bluetooth or analog audio input and Alexa is not yet available in France
The Sonos One is available in black or white for 230 €. It’s a great music-oriented speaker that echoes the winning formula of its little brother Play: 1 and brings all the intelligence of voice assistants. However, we will have to wait a little longer before the Alexa and Google service is available in France.
