Sony Xperia 5: the complete Review

[ad_1]

Propose a 21: 9 smartphone that fits in your hand. This is the bet that Sony made at the IFA Berlin held last September. Compared to the Xperia 1 presented in February, the only notable difference comes from the use of a 6.1 inch OLED panel rather than 6.5 inches. The result is a more compact camera.

Less bulky and a little lighter than its predecessor, the Xperia 5 is indeed much more pleasant to handle than its big brother. Always as well finished, it sports a sober design that corresponds to the image of serious that wants to return Sony. This smartphone is a high-end model and the Japanese manufacturer gives us for our money. In pocket, here too its size is an advantage, it feels much less present than the Xperia 1 which was hard to be forgotten.

Increasing autonomy

The diagonal slab is not quite the only difference that can be made in terms of display. The definition goes from 4K to Full HD +. A very relevant choice as the quality gap with the Ultra HD is imperceptible. In addition, during the Review of the Xperia 5, we noticed that the very high resolution of the screen (643 dpi against 449 on the Xperia 5) affected the autonomy of the smartphone. Despite a battery of 3300 mAh, he had held only 10:15 to our versatile use Review that mixes various and varied uses of everyday life.

With its battery of only 3 140 mAh, the Xperia 5 reaches, for its part, the 11 hours 33 minutes to this same Review of versatile autonomy. In streaming video, it provides 8 h 17 of autonomy – there also better than the 6:44 of the Xperia 1. We are far from the performance of the most enduring competitors in the sector, but it clearly shows that Sony has made the good choice by choosing a Full HD + rather than 4K, really useless on this screen size.

A power equivalent to Xperia 1

So much for the only differences between the Xperia 1 and the Xperia 5. All the rest of the performances appeared to us to be identical. The 21: 9 screen is always nice to watch movies at CinemaScope. On the other hand, it will show black stripes on the sides on the 16: 9 series.

Despite the change in screen definition, the graphics performance is also equivalent. The power of the Adreno 640 chip now seems sufficient to handle both a 4K definition and Full HD. As an indication, our lab measured Geekbench 4 GPU scores of 7,652 on the Xperia 5 and 7,362 on the Xperia 1. On the GFX Bench Car Chase Review, the Xperia 5 achieved 33 FPS and Xperia 1. .. 33 FPS.

Still some progress to make a photo

Same thing for photo quality, despite the undeniable progress of Sony in the field, the brand is still and still lagging behind the competition. This is particularly the case of the portrait mode, often damaged by some details. Note however that the combination of the triple camera module is excellent: 16, 25 and 52 mm; ultra-wide angle, wide-angle and portrait. The winning trio in terms of use.
