Speed, connectivity, energy efficiency… Version 17 of the 5G standard expected in September 2021

The 3GPP organization wastes no time. While the deployment of 5G is still in its infancy, the working group responsible for creating an international standard to frame the new mobile standard announced Monday December 16, 2019 to start designing the 17th version, planned for September 2021. Still with the same objective: take into account the needs of the main beneficiaries, namely businesses, as well as the expectations of society.

More stability and services

Version 15, adopted in mid-2018, consisted of backing 5G to the preexisting 4G network to accelerate its deployment on a global scale. The next one, now in the implementation phase, will set up a real 5G infrastructure from start to finish by June 2020. It is on this that most telecom operators base their tests. The following version will go beyond the question of installations, in order to take into account stability considerations in particular.

In this first draft, version 17 reports technical configurations which should, moreover, make new services compatible with 5G. Thus, in addition to higher speed through deployment up to the 60 GHz frequency band, energy efficiency would be significantly improved. Simultaneous 5G and 4G connectivity should also be part of it, which is interesting in the context of multi-SIM support.

The full integration of the C-V2X standard should make localization precise "to the nearest centimeter". Enough to refine the GPS navigation system, but especially those dedicated to autonomous driving. IoT is not to be outdone, since its application in industry should be accelerated. The NR-Light standard should eventually meet the needs of bandwidth-smart health connected objects while limiting energy consumption. The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (Etsi), based in Nice, is responsible for representing the Old Continent in these international negotiations. And discussions should be tough until these adaptations are finally set in stone.
