Study on "Quantified Self" shows: fitness, medicine and health apps on the advance

Every third student in Germany uses self-tracking tools to measure their health online. This is the result of a study by the University of Bielefeld.

We have already reported on current eHealth studies. A team of researchers from the Faculty of Health Sciences has now asked 675 students from different German universities about their usage habits and motives for health and medical apps. The Bielefeld researchers primarily wanted to find out the reasons why people control their health themselves.

A third use health apps

The Investigation by Bielefeld University shows that a third of the respondents use medical apps on their smartphones. Over 70 percent of users control their daily exercise or sleeping habits. Every second uses fitness apps for sports, e.g. to record heart rate, calorie consumption or running distance.

Medicine apps provide information about health

According to the study, the respondents use these applications to better monitoring their health and to further improve their performance. Almost 80 percent would like doctors to advise them in the future on how to use medical apps and technical applications correctly.

Data protection less important

If a young academic decides whether to use a health app, data protection is less important to him. Users are much more interested in what added value the health-related app offers them, how other users and above all their friends and acquaintances rate the app and whether they incur any costs. Only every third person feels adequately informed about the potential usage risks.
