Survey found: Almost a third of Germans use fitness trackers

31 percent of Germans use fitness trackers to measure their vital signs, as the latest survey by Bitkom Research shows.

18 percent of respondents use fitness wristbands, 13 percent use smartphones with fitness apps and 6 percent use smartwatches. That gives the representative Bitkom Research survey, in which 1,236 people aged 14 and over were asked about how to use health apps and fitness trackers. The most frequently measured vital signs by users are body temperature (99%), body weight (75%), number of steps taken (62%) and distance covered (57%). According to the survey, 31 percent of all respondents also measure their blood pressure with a conventional measuring device, and in the age group 65 and over, as much as 60 percent.

In the event of illness, 75 percent of all those surveyed would transmit their vital signs measured with a fitness tracker to their doctor. It is even 93 percent of the chronically ill. According to the survey, 30 percent of smartphone users use health apps that, in addition to measuring and evaluating vital signs, help them find doctors or pharmacies, help them lose weight or quit smoking, or promote healthy sleep. Almost two thirds (65%) of fitness tracker or health app users generally want to improve their health, 36 percent want to exercise more, 26 percent want to know more about their state of health and 15 percent want to optimize their training. In contrast, only 3 percent of those surveyed use health monitoring to get better quickly in the event of illness.
