Tarzan VR is a solo adventure game that will consist of several episodes, just like the immortal Vader. For the story and the atmosphere, we are well immersed in virtual reality in the jungle.

In 2020, developer Stonepunk Studios and publisher Fun Train brought the iconic Tarzan character to virtual reality (VR) with Tarzan VR for PC VR headsets. Excellent news the game lands on July 1, 2021 on Oculus Quest natively (without PC).

Gameplay Tarzan VR The Great Ape and The Jagged Edge

In this first episode, Jane has been kidnapped by a group of invaders, and Tarzan (you) must seek the wisdom of the Great Ape in order to uncover the motives of his mysterious captors. You’ll also have access to the treehouse and Tarzan’s health home island.

While each episode unlocks a new weapon (episode 1 features the “Mighty Ax” for example), classic mechanics like the ability to swing in trees and talk to animals are still there. The gameplay offers a lot of physical effort to keep you immersed in the world of Tarzan VR. If you don’t swing, you’ll climb, swim, or beat enemies.

Numbers 2 and 3 can be played by unlocking a new weapon and a new region of the world to explore and conquer as the adventure progresses. The game also announces easter eggs hidden everywhere (tip: explore deep waters while swimming).

The game is interesting with its mix of actions, between exploration phase by swinging from vine to vine to melee combat. The possibilities for interaction are therefore very numerous and varied:

  • Walk your way through the jungle,

  • To go twice as fast, swing from vine to vine,

  • Climb rock faces or certain trees,

  • Climb the ladder,

  • Swim in all the places of the game where the water is deep enough,

  • Fight with your bare hands, but you will also have access to bows, slingshots and other weapons to help you fight enemy mercenaries.

In addition to the King of the Jungle’s abilities, you get special powers like “Call of the Wild” and “Earth Vision”. The first allows you to summon your allies, including local wildlife, to help you. The second allows you to easily follow your enemies and find new paths through the jungle.

For the movements it is possible to do it with the joystick or in teleportation mode.

The first two Tarzan VR games

The first part “The Great Ape”(The great ape) gives access to Tarzan’s big tree house and his native island. Discover artifacts, play games and explore the wonders of nature in the deepest corners of the wild world of Tarzan – almost a game in itself!

Episode 2 “The Jagged Edge”(Available now) and the 3“The Dead of Night”(Coming soon) allow you to unlock new weapons (slingshot in 2 and arc in 3), more difficult obstacles, threatening enemies and other surprises throughout the adventure.

Tarzan VR version for Oculus Quest

For the Oculus Quest edition, Steel Wool Studios (Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Most Wanted) took care of the porting. Fun Train has confirmed that the launch will include all three episodes: Episode 1- The Great Ape, Episode 2- The Jagged Edge, and Episode 3- The Dead of Night. At this time, the Steam version of Tarzan VR does not offer the third episode, which is still listed as “coming soon”.

Best known for its horror title The Exorcist: Legion VR starring Wolf & Wood, Fun Train’s latest episodic adventure, Tarzan VR, takes you to his lush jungle house where you can explore his treehouse and the surrounding environment in search of secrets. Then, each of the comic book-inspired episodes takes you deeper into the jungle, battling mercenaries and learning new skills along the way.

Tarzan VR graphics and soundtrack

Rendering interactions is what took the longest time in VR modeling. Indeed, swinging using the Spider man effect (as in Yupitergrad) is easier than having the sensation of grabbing a vine to swing to grab another.

The enemies or non-playing characters are generated automatically (and randomly by mixing the different body / head elements) in the different camps, which makes it possible to replay in different situations. However, I find the graphics of the PNGs out of step with the superb scenery (vegetation, water effect, objects). One has a little the impression that the animals and the mercenaries are added on the bottom. I hope that the rendering will be more harmonious in the final version.

For the sound, the sound effects are present and you will be able to hear the famous cry of Tarzan.

Studio Stonepunk Studios

The studio has already produced two VR games, RollerGirls from Beyond launched at the end of 2016 and Primordian early 2018 (still in early access, with great trashy graphics). The studio is also working on “Disciples of Dawn”Still in VR.Note that Tarzan VR is edited by Fun Train which also offered TheExorcist: Legion.

Tarzan VR price and release date

Originally slated for release in 2019, Tarzan VR has been available since November 2020 for PCVR headsets and July 1, 2021 for Oculus Quest.

Tarzan VR is made up of 3 episodes. The first two are available from November 17, 2020. The first episode The Great Ape is priced at $ 12.49. The second part “The Jagged Edge” is at 8.19 $. Finally the last episode The “Dead of Night” could be released at the end of December.

Tarzan VR review

An ambitious project not badly delayed, but which promises an immersive gameplay with many actions such as swimming to explore the seabed or swinging from vine to vine.

The graphics of the landscapes are particularly neat, as well as the original soundtrack. There remains a question about the quality of the NPCs which are dynamically generated to always be different.

Tarzan VR doesn’t present any major difficulty, and the enemy’s AI isn’t there to make you suffer. The overall experience is pleasant to have fun for several hours in VR. The game has already been enriched with new episodes and the port to Quest should allow for more.
