The child, the mole, the fox and the horse for what age? from 4 years old

The Child, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse (The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse) is a 2022 short film. Cartoon in the guise of the book from which it is taken, we have the impression that the drawn images have come to life. Many rather philosophical dialogues, but which the youngest will be able to appreciate at their level.

MESSAGES

Initiatory journey

A child who finds himself lost outside, will meet different animals which will above all offer him a bond. The others are important. We can say to ourselves that it is strange to be interested only in the exterior of things, when it is the interior that is important. He is reminded of the importance of kindness. We are free to choose how we react. Hope. Even if things are difficult, we can do it when we are surrounded.

Fear

We must not be afraid of the wide world, we will be afraid, but accompanied by others we will be less afraid. Everyone carries a vulnerability within them, but one can cope (the child is afraid of being too ordinary, the mole feels tiny, the fox suffers from being often attacked, the horse cannot be himself ). Strength. The child may feel guilty for not succeeding in things (but his friends value him, life is difficult, but he has friends). Asking for help is a brave thing, it’s the refusal to give up. Courage.

Self esteem

We can feel hopeless, with thoughts that play tricks and remind us that we are worth nothing, that there is no more hope. But each of us can be loved. We learn that the horse that knew how to fly didn’t want to make the others jealous and decided not to do so anymore (he will feel useful and well accepted by the group and will be able to show his wings). Importance of trusting yourself, you can be loved as you are.

Friendship

It’s good to have friends, and they can be of all sizes and with different functions. We can say that we love our friends in different ways (saying that it’s good that we’re all together can be an “I love you”).

Foyer

We wonder what home is, a house or those with whom we are good. At the end of the short film, the child will prefer to stay with his friends, rather than having a roof over his head. Abandonment. We discover a small child at the beginning of the short film, he is lost, he wants to find his home. We are told about this feeling of loss of bearings, of the need to be able to be secure.

Kindness

Kindness is the greatest strength. When a little boy is asked what he wants to do later, he says he wants to be nice. We are here to love and be loved. Courtesy. We see the attention to the other, many thanks, apologies.

Tolerance

We must not fear those who are different, or even those who seem dangerous like the fox, indeed here we will see him being friendly.

Contemplation

Poetry. Falling snow, animals, and reflective words, a short film that reflects a certain poetry (whether in the images or in the words).

Winter

Exteriors that we discover in winter. Snow. There is this white powder everywhere around a child.

anthropomorphic animals

A mole, a fox, a horse, who are going to talk to a child. Their appearance is very animal, but they are endowed with reflection and are here rather forms of Totem for the little one who has certain difficulties.

Game

We see the child having fun in the snow. Gallop with the horse.

Gluttony

The mole thinks only of eating a cake (which it can do during the end credits).

Help others

Take care of those we meet (even when it’s a fox that had been interested in eating us) (by helping, we can get help in return).

Literature

A children’s book by Charlie Mackesy.

DIFFICULT SCENES

Hazards

A fox follows the tracks of the child and the mole and arrives under the tree where they are, it is feared that they will fall (and the little mole hides). The mole rolls and the snow surrounds him creating a ball, he ends up falling into the river, the current carries him away, he risks drowning.

Faintness

A mole is delighted to see a big cake, and realizes it’s just a tree. We hear a noise in the distance which could be crying, they come down from the tree and discover the fox trapped, it is the mole which approaches in spite of the fox which returns to him rather maliciously that he can kill him. The child mourns the death of his friend (who in fact was saved by the fox). The child lets go of the horse and falls into the stream, he feels responsible and cries. The weather is getting dark, thunder, it’s not reassuring, it’s raining, friends are going to the forest, and it’s just as dark. The horse has something important to say to the child, we fear a problem.

Sadness

The child is brought back to the lights of the houses, he will find a home, but we see the suffering of leaving the animals that have become his friends. The child walks away, we see the sad eyes of the animals.

VOCABULARY

Many words, with a simple vocabulary, but oriented relationship, it can be challenging.

A short film around the existential difficulties that we can feel. The need to have loving people around, and to love. A form of philosophical tale visible to the whole family, and which will inevitably speak to everyone. From 4 years old, but will have to be present because themes close to abandonment and the need for protection are likely to affect the youngest.
