The French are slowly becoming aware of e-health

E-health uses remain underdeveloped in France, but more and more Internet users are ready to transmit their medical data and communicate with their doctor online.

If health applications have already made their hole in the phones of the French, other parts of e-health are still far from having conquered the population. Among them, telemedicine services (mainly online medical advice), medical appointment booking sites and even the famous shared medical record. In his 2016 smart health connected Health study, the CCM Benchmark Institute (which belongs to the same group as the JDN) is looking in particular at how the French perceive these new services.

The uses in terms of telemedicine are still minimal in France: only 16% of respondents have already sent medical data to their doctor on the Internet, 10% asked a question by email to their practitioner and 7% asked for a prescription in line. However, some of these services raised a certain appetite among the respondents, who said they were interested. On the other hand, carrying out a medical consultation on the Internet always puts off 65% of the respondents and request a connection with a health professional for a telephone conversation 66% of the French.

While 56% of respondents say they do not want to use online medical appointment sites, they are gaining popularity. 32% of Internet users who have never used their services still know of their existence. Among the incentive factors, get an appointment quickly, choose the most suitable niche or make an appointment at any time of the day.

The 56% of Internet users who say they are reluctant to use this type of site explain, for 63% of them, that they prefer to call their doctor directly, while 25% do not wish to communicate their personal data.

While the government is trying to relaunch the Shared Medical Record to centralize French patient data on a single platform, 45% of respondents to the CCM Benchmark study admit that they have never heard of it and 31% do not know precisely what it's about. But only 38% of respondents say, after explanation, that they do not want to open their DMP. Good news for e-health stakeholders who need the data it contains (Read: "E-health start-ups want to resuscitate the DMP", from 05/10/2016).

Finally, concerning the sites of opinion on health professionals, which are just starting to emerge in France, the majority of the respondents say they are interested but only 29% knew that they existed.
