The Lion and the Three Bandits a film for what age? from 5 years old
The Lion and the Three Bandits (Folk og røvere i Kardemomme by) is an almost stop motion film from 2022 (we don’t see that the synthesis animates the characters). A narrator introduces the story. The protagonists sing a lot. The pace is rather slow and therefore suitable for children. We change technique by offering animated images when stories are told in the film.
MESSAGES
Bandit
We are shown three people who are not integrated into the village, we feel they are sad not to be part of the community, but do not hesitate to steal from the inhabitants and traders. Integration. To change these people, you have to be sympathetic to them, help them to do well and see what is good in them. Work. Having a job useful to the community is proof of good integration. All the people in the village are useful and have a job. Tolerance.
Police
A police chief is sympathetic, but unmotivated to deal with thieves. Flight. There are thieves in the city, brigands with a lion (stealing is bad). Punishment. Punishment should not hurt, but allow change.
Musical comedy
The characters start singing at any time.
Help others
Tobias, an old man helps a little boy to get his friend to go to the party. The brigands are going to put out a fire. Cooperation. The whole village forms a chain to bring water to put out the fire.
Motivation
Laziness. We are dealing with three boys who have hair in their hands. The three robbers don’t want to do housework and cooking, they live in filth and don’t want to exert themselves and would rather steal than become workers.
The Lion and the Three Bandits
Education
Three bandits do not want to do anything at home, it is a woman who must teach them to do well. She shows herself to be authoritarian, they can’t manage to say anything other than no (in the end it’s not by being yelled at that you obey, but by being treated well). Hygiene. They must learn to wash themselves. Repair. When you realize that you haven’t done things well, you have to show others that you are also a good person. Redemption. By saving the animals and putting out the fire, the bandits will be accepted by the village.
Pets
All of these animals exist to be useful to humans, and they’re cool. We are shown a camel that can sing, a parrot that can speak and sing, a dog that likes to steal sausages, a lion that guards the house.
Party
A village that likes to have different festivals. Anniversary. Including for a birthday of a loved person. Circus. It’s good to have a circus in a village (and musicians making music).
Wedding
Casper seems interested in Aunt Sofie (he is going to ask Aunt Sofie to become (he has no time to continue his sentence, she says yes right away). Stereotype. A woman without a man is very annoying (and a woman knows how to take care of the housework and cook).
Night
It is during the night that the brigands want to steal.
Temporality
We see the time passing with the night coming and the sun coming back.
Literature
This film is adapted from the work of the Norwegian author Thorbjørn Egne who is very well known in his country.
Joy of living
We are presented with a city where everything is going well. The law is never bother others, be polite and do after live as you want.
The Lion and the Three Bandits
DIFFICULT SCENES
Hazards
The lion gets in front of Aunt Sofie and roars, but the woman calls him a kitten. A candle falls and risks setting fire to a table (the fire spreads quickly, a parrot risks burning, like the dog who is also in the apartment). One of the robbers wants to help, but the fire is already behind the door, it’s dangerous, Jasper has to climb to the top and brings one of his friends up, the flames are there, they have to save the animals, we see the dog get scared and the ceiling will collapse. The rope was not well tied and the parrot falls, it is feared that it will crash. Casper wants to try to put out the fire and stays at the top of the tower, we fear for a moment that he will not reappear.
Faintness
A man complains that he has been robbed and the chief of police only writes it down in a notebook. Aunt Sofie is not happy because everything is not rigorous and she has the impression that everything is happening in her town. A little girl can’t leave her house to go to a party (her aunt Sofie forbids it). The party singer has lost her voice, Aunt Sofie is asked to sing (she starts to say no). Sofie’s song criticizes the police for being too nice, the driver should stop singing. The three robbers are in a tree and talk about the thefts they could make. The brigands steal the tram, and advance very quickly (the driver is very annoyed when he sees that his vehicle has been stolen). The lion in the brigands’ house impresses the others (but also seems to annoy the brigands a bit). The brigands have a plan to kidnap Aunt Sofie to take care of their home. Chef Bastian isn’t very motivated to stop the bandits (they just catch a dog eating sausages). The policeman knocks on the door of the robbers to free Sofie, but she decides to stay and teach them good manners. The following night, the robbers take Sofie home to get rid of her and then put the mess back in their house. A little boy mourns the disappearance of his dog, he finds him in prison. The two children have been seen by the lion, they are a little scared. The thieves talk about going to steal the next night, the children are going to go and warn the inhabitants (who do not want to warn the chief of police, but do justice themselves). The brigands lie when they are at the police station pretending that they are innocent, but they are not fooled, and are sentenced to 43 days in prison (it doesn’t matter to them, because they are going to be fed). In prison, they are well treated and will agree to wash themselves. The robbers are worried about their lion who is alone at home and has nothing to eat. Jonathan and Casper have found work, the last one is a little annoyed to have nothing. The end of the film is rather abrupt.
Mockery
Jasper, one of the three thieves is shown to be rather silly. The three thieves seem to be poorly organized, they lose everything and do not take care of their interior. We laugh at Aunt Sofie’s snoring (and even though she gets her head banged during her kidnapping, she doesn’t wake up). The policeman is rather shown as a coward.
VOCABULARY
Classic. Many songs.
We are told that to get rid of thieves, they have to be integrated into the village (prison should be used for that and not to punish) (work is good integration). A single real tense scene, with a fire in a house and animals which are in danger of burning. A film visible from 5 years old, but it remains long with sequences that will not be understood by the youngest, we follow different characters. The role of the woman is rather stereotypical (although the director tried to reduce this in his film compared to what was shown in the original book).
The Norwegian writer (Thorbjørn Egner) has written other books, one of which has also been adapted in stop-motion (In the enchanted forest of Oukybouky). And the same director has also produced other stop motion films (this one is a mixture of filmed sets and characters created in synthesis) (Snow for Christmas. The Great Cheese Race. A Trip to the Moon) . And in synthetic image of lower quality (Ploddy, the electric car leads the investigation).
